I love the idea of assigning roles during reading. It gives students a goal and a singular thing to focus on while reading, rather than just "highlight and annotate," and then they don't know what to highlight or annotate

I like the idea of doing the reading as a whole group and then sharing just at your small group table. I think it takes some of the pressure off of those students who are reluctant sharers.

I know others have mentioned it, but Diffit is a great tool to help curate questions off of a reading resource aligned with our TEKS, as well as taking a reading we want for class and altering it based on students reading levels to make it more digestible

I really think that the best skill that I learned is teaching students to be active readers. If it is a skill that they need in college. They complain that it takes a long time, but it saves them time in the long run.

A lot of the strategies on the Close & Critical reading are useful at all grade levels--but I especially like the one that asks them to challenge the text. I love the idea of having them challenge using content knowledge/what they've learned in class to justify their response.

I appreciate the thinking map for Artful Strategies that gives an outline for what questions to ask the students to think about with art, enough for them to understand it. In language they can immediately wrap their head around and start mapping.

Teaching active reading strategies: allow students to collaborate with eachother while reading to help get meaning from text, understand how others experience text differently and allow stronger readers to work with lower level readers. Another helpful strategy is to give students questions to consider while reading.
