Hello and welcome to all students, parents, and fellow educators.

My name is Miss Lexie, and I am beyond excited to start this new journey with you all.

A little about me:

I have been studying teaching since 2020, taking a year off to start my family. I then began studying on a reduced workload to ensure I am excelling in my studies, while still maintaining a healthy home life balance.

Teaching has always been the career pathway that I have chosen. I was actually in primary school myself when I decided that this was what I wanted to do when I was older.

As a teacher, I want to create a classroom that is welcoming and inclusive to all students and empowers all my students to do their best and be curious. I believe that every student can thrive with the right support and environment.

Outside of the classroom, I enjoy cooking, Painting, and spending time with my little family. I also enjoy reading, whether that be to my children or books to myself.

I am looking forward to meeting you all and starting our learning journey together.

Warm regards,

Miss Lexie

Year 2-6 Teacher

NSW spelling sequences - Prompt 3

Hello Everyone,

Today we are looking at the NSW spelling sequences.

The NSW spelling sequences are teaching guides developed by the NSW Department of Education. Teachers using it will follow a weekly and term-based plan that includes a range of spelling patterns, word lists, and teaching focuses.

Each week will have a specific focus on a Phonological component, an orthographic component, and a morphological component. The resource also provides sample words to use for inquiry and supporting information you may need as the teacher. The resource will not, however, provide you with worksheets, assessment rubrics, or differentiation scaffolds for learners needing support.

This resource supports your students in learning pattern recognition when spelling words. The resource provides more knowledge on base words and the prefixes that are added before the base words and suffixes that are added after (Thomas, D., & Thomas, A., 2021, pp. 267-268).

I have chosen the base word produce. The suffixes for this word include -er, -ion, -ive, and -ing. The prefixes for the word are re- and un-. I asked AI to make a game for me using these, and they created a game called 'Spin and Spell', getting the students to have a printed spinner and word list and follow the next steps.

The student would start with the base word: Produce, and then they would spin their spinner to land on a number that would match either a prefix or a suffix. The student would then add this to their base word 'Produce' and create a new word. The student then has the opportunity to write a sentence using that word for a 'bonus'.

I believe AI is a great little tool, but it can sometimes overcomplicate or oversimplify things. This game, for instance, was a game I chose after asking AI to create a game a couple of times, as I believed that most of the games would be too overcomplicated for the students and would take away from what I actually wanted to teach them.

Thankyou,

Miss Lexie

Year 2-6 teacher

Exploring real life issues in the classroom - Prompt 4

Dear parents/carers,

I am writing to explain to you all the importance of exploring real-world issues and environmental challenges within the classroom. By exploring this in the classroom the students are able to see connections between the world and their lives, they will build an understanding of how humans and their choices can help or harm animals and their homes and also develop their compassionate thinking skills. this aligns with the Victorian curriculum (VCELT251) (VCELY257) (VCELY288)

The students in the grade 3-4 have recently explored an article on 'Kids News' named "New tool to help save threatened animals in urban neighborhoods". This article explored how threatened species can be living in or near our backyards.

I printed the article for the students and as a class we went through it identifying the five W's (Who, What, Where, When, Why). Through exploring the text and doing this activity the students are able to use their critical thinking skills by asking questions, thinking about how humans and animals coexist and also understanding cause and effect.

Throughout the article there is a variety of images of animals including a northern hairy-nosed wombat, the glossy black-cockatoo, and a Baw Baw frog.

The article introduces an interactive tool that the students can use "My Backyard". This tool allows the students to learn about local species and how to protect them. Helping the students with their local biodiversity, environmental awareness and their digital literacy.

Feel free to have a go of this tool at home with your children and have conversations about these real world/environmental issues to continue their thinking.

Here is the link to the article:

https://www.kidsnews.com.au/animals/new-tool-to-help-save-threatened-animals-in-urban-neighbourhoods/news-story/657fe9732356782d2ec6a631ebccc46f

Warm regards,

Miss Lexie

Year 2-6 Teacher
