All throughout history, the use of drugs has been present in our society and in youths lives as well. When looking at drug use among adults compared to that of youth, we see that drug use is more prevalent in that of youth and there is less of a gender disparity as well. Now days, your typical everyday high school experience is a tad different due to the ongoing pandemic, however, that does not mean that drug use has stopped. During this pandemic, there has been a surge in illegal drugs being shipped into the United states, as well as, driving up the cost of some of these illegal drugs. Drug usage in high school students does affect their attendance and their behavior and as I stated previously, drug use increases a students likelihood to become involved in other dangerous activities.

The ongoing pandemic has caused a lot of things to change when it comes to educating our youth, but one thing has not and that is the use of drugs by high schoolers. Despite school looking a little different these days, access to drugs has not slowed down, even if the students are remote learning. During this time, it is important for teachers and counselors to continue to educate the students to the best of their ability, as well as, incorporating drug education into the curriculum. The Drug Policy Alliance has recently released their new program called Safety First: Real Drug Education for Teens, the first harm reduction-based drug education curriculum for high school students. This curriculum is free, consists of 15 lessons that can be completed in a 45-50 minute period, and align with the Common Core State Standards and the National Health Education Standards. In order to incorporate this curriculum in the best possible environment, a health class teacher would be the ideal person to lead this program as it can easily be integrated into their curriculum. Due to the ongoing pandemic, The Drug Policy Alliance has been able to provide a distance learning version of the Safety First: Real Drug Education for Teens curriculum.

Parents, teachers, school counseling advisory council, the principal, and administrators all play their different parts of being a supporter of student success. During this on-going pandemic, students are either virtual learning or going part-time in-person and the other days virtual. The families are the main support for students who are not attending in-person so it will be vital for the school counselors to collaborate with them. The school counseling advisory council's role would be to help guide the school counselors as they provide services during this uncertain time, to prepare the students for success. The teachers, the principal, and the administrators all share the role of adapting their responsibilities so that they can best support the students. Within their specific roles, teachers will have to integrate the program into their curriculum, the principal and the administrators both will see to it that pre/post surveys are completed and analyzed so they can see whether or not the program is having an impact. They will make sure to set the students up for achievement and will also make sure to stay up to date on policy changes regarding academic requirements for students. Community members role will be to speak to students about what they see happening in the community and different resources that are available to them.
