I think the number of people (4.4 million) in Australia living with a disability may be in-correct due to discrepancies in the definition of disability across different data sources. It is my opinion that the number may actually be much higher if all responses were based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework. Many people who live with disabilities (as based on the ICF) may not view themselves as having a disability, either due to an internal self-belief, or due to external social stigma. Therefore, data from some sources may be inconsistent and incorrect.

Due to the ageing population of Australia, i believe the number of reported disabilities would be quite high. However, i believe there would be inconsistency between the number of reported cases of disability and the actual number of cases. This can be due to misdiagnoses, lack of awareness of disability in individuals with a lessened severity, and possibly the stigma surrounding disability preventing individuals from wanting to disclose this information.

According to the AIHW, 1 in 6 Australians have a disability accounting for 18% of the population. The prevalence of disability increases with age; meaning the longer we live, the more likely we are to experience disability. Therefore, while looking at the statistics it's important to consider this along with other factors such as dual diagnosis and those who have yet to report having a disability.

https://www.aihw.gov.au/reports/disability/people-with-disability-in-australia-2020-in-brief/contents/how-many-people-have-disability

According to the 2020 AIWA statistics 1 in 6 Australians live with a disability which amounts to 18% of the population (4.4 million). This can be partly attributed to the increasing life expectancy of the population as the prevalence of disability increases with age. I think it’s highly likely that this figure may be higher than what is actually reported as the older population may just accept their personal health issues as being a result of the ageing process rather than a disability and consequently be too proud to seek medical assistance due to their “she’ll be right” mentality. Also some of these may be relatively mild disabilities that are yet to be officially diagnosed. Other factors may include cultural differences whereby western medicine is not readily accepted in their culture and therefore go unreported, gender differences particularly amongst elderly males who downplay the severity of their issues and fail to seek assistance, and finally individuals who live in remote regions are perhaps less likely to seek medical help and simply learn to live with it. So overall I think it’s highly likely that the disability rate is higher than what is actually reported for the above reasons.

This is a really interesting question while the prevalence rate is recorded around 18% I imagine that the rate is higher. I work with youth at risk of homelessness and some young people have opted to not get diagnosed. Additionally, people from disadvantaged backgrounds may have gaps in their educational, medical background and other aspects of their life. This could possibly result in not having a diagnosis for an underlying issue.

I feel the total number of Australians who reported a disability would have been underreported. Australia has one of the best healthcare systems in the world and for that reason people are living longer with "disability" this also means they are likely to have other comorbid heath conditions of which many may be underrecognized or diagnosed inadequately. The latest findings from the AIHW report that approx 1 in 6 (4.4 million) Australians are living with a disability. Taking into account the SDAC definition of disability this number is in fact probably much higher and has likely been underreported.

Reference
https://www.aihw.gov.au/reports/disability/people-with-disability-in-australia/contents/people-with-disability/prevalence-of-disability

Due to Australia having an increasing ageing population, I believe reported rates of disability would be increasing. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare one in six Australians have a disability, which equates to about 4.4 million people. Also considering the increasing life-expectancy, it would be expected that individuals are living with a disability for longer periods of time. However I do believe their would be discrepancy in statistics, as self-diagnosis does depend on an individual's perception of 'disability', likely increasing misdiagnosis rates.

Before research, I believed that a large percentage of Australians would be living with a disability or have at least once in their lifetime. This is because of the ageing population the world is experiencing, and therefore, a larger population is more susceptible to developing diseases that can lead to a disability.

The ABS (2018) has stated that 4.4 million Australians (17.7%), which is a decrease from the 2015 findings of 18.3%. However, the prevalence of disability is increasing with with age.

The People with Disability in Australia report states that 1 in 6 Australians have a disability but this could be an under-estimation due to under reporting. Factors affecting under reporting are a lack of understanding what the definition parameters of a disability are and cultural differences in accepting/admitting disability.

It is reported by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (2020) that approximately 18% (1 in 6) of Australians are living with a disability.

My assumption for people reporting a disability would be approximately 20%. This number would be in the high range due to Australia's demographic being an aging population and the likelihood of living with a disability does increase with age.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and welfare (2020), 4 million people in Australia have disability, calculating to around 18% of the population. My prediction was quite accurate regarding that the prevalence of disability increases with age. The AIHW (2020) stated that around 1 in 8 people aged under 65 have some level of disability however this raised to 1 in 2 people for those aged 65 and over. As we live longer the more we are likely to experience some form of disability.

My guess would be that only around 20% of Australian's have reported a disability, but that around 40% of Australian's experience a disability.
