Social media has become a very big part of our personal and business lives. Companies now turn towards social media to show off their latest product and gain awareness of their company. Social media is a great tool to get connected to the world for free (or a fee to have your desired content as a paid promotion to appear at the top of news feeds or as number one in search results.) and companies are recognizing this. Ever wanted to learn about the latest game that is going to be released soon? You would look up the company through Google to see what the company has posted about for information. Sometimes, the companies would post screen shots or short gifs of the game as teasers. Gaming companies know where their audience looks and what they are looking for to get consumers excited for their product.
Twitter has become sort of an informal way for gaming companies to personally connect with their audience. Showing off their new game, posting content about DLC (downloadable content), showing off hidden items such as easter eggs or locations. Big gaming companies like Nintendo, Xbox, Playstation, Rare, and Sonic the Hedgehog use social media to connect with gamers.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a very well known character with many games. The Twitter page for Sonic the Hedgehog is very active with funny posts, funny videos, merchandise you can purchase, information about their upcoming/newly released game(s), and gameplay. Because of what they post on their Twitter, it makes gamers feel more compelled to buy a Sonic game in stores when they remember how much fun the Twitter page is. Even if a game flops (which it has, Sonic '06 I'm looking at you!), the Twitter account pokes fun at it with everyone else.

Nintendo takes a more professional approach to social media. Unlike the Sonic the Hedgehog account, Nintendo of America post more professional and informative tweets about their games and merchandise. Nintendo is a better-known company, producing games and characters such as Mario, the Legend of Zelda and Pokemon. Nintendo uses social media as a more informative and promotional approach by showing off game trailers, in game content, stores to purchase games and merchandise, polls about the games, and awards received.

Nintendo's target audience is aimed towards young kids, keeping things family friendly, and their Twitter page reflects that. Their tweets are very friendly and short to read for kids, mostly just a short informative tweet about a new game or game to be released soon, just enough to get kids excited. Nintendo knows how to promote even old games to make people excited about the games they already own. They release DLC and promote it on their Twitter and other social media platforms by showing off teaser pictures or videos of the new items you can receive.
Nintendo's newest console, the Switch, has been releasing Indie games. Indie games are games developed by smaller companies and even sometimes by a single person making it difficult for them to sell their products. By putting Indie games on their console, it creates a connection with Indie developers and promotes their business more.
