This shows us the importance of cultural control as poems and literature like Anna's would tarnish the reputation of Russia. This was bad and needed to be controlled as information like this could tarnish the integrity and reputation of Russia causing disturbance. Furthermore it was important to have cultural control as making poetry or artworks that would go against the status quo as they were made to conflict with conformity and made to combat societal standards and expectations at the time which were regarded as negative to most people at the time. And in acting and doing so in this behavior meant that you weren't being a good communist and that you were defying the law and word put down by Stalin himself.

Furthermore, this helps us understand what Stalin's intentions and what he desired as a collective in terms of everyone's individual self conduct and presentation of themselves and their opinions.

Of Anna Akhmatova and Art

Art as a medium is able to express complex emotions and issues through words and paintings. Art is able to criticize and question ideologies and systems of government. Anna Akhmatova uses her poems to discuss these complex issues of Stalinist Russia in order to merge her own personal drama and the blight of those who are suffering under Stalin. She describes herself as the, “mouth through which a hundred million scream,” where she voices the horrors of those that suffer under Stalin.

Thus cultural control in Stalin's Russia is about censoring and dissuading those that speak out against Stalin's Russia. These ideas can spread through poems and artworks.

The importance and impact of the cultural control in Stalinist Russia is evident in Akhmatova's work because of the intimate relationship she has with that same cultural repression - she, being a passionate poet, was unable to voice her views in relative comfort due to the political repression that occurred in the Purges. The reason for such repression, especially in Akhmatova's case, was in order to consolidate the hold that Stalin had over the nation in terms of ideology.

Before the war, Anna was a celebrated talent but in Stalin's Russia, she became the victim of censorship and immense suffering. With courage, she used her poetry to express this, becoming the "mouth through which a hundred million scream," acting, as it were, "as the people's conscience." This would have been fairly dangerous to the regime as it forces people to think and challenge their reality. It forces them to question many of the things the regime would have them believe. In this way, it helps us understand the importance of cultural control in Stalin's Russia.
