They prefer to eat leaner meals so as to purify their bodies for the holiday coming up. Instead, Italian Christmas Eve dishes consisted largely of fish! In the past, eel was a popular dish to be prepared, though that has faded over time. Instead, these days Christmas Eve dishes consist mostly of baccala, octopus, and shellfish.
