XtraMath is a program that I use each morning in my third grade math class. There are four levels to the program (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). The students have the option to either work on getting their green checkmark for the day during their free-time morning period or during the last ten minutes of math class.

After logging on to XtraMath, the students will be taken to their own "classroom" as I like to call it. There is a computerized teacher that tells them how many questions they must answer. When the students receives a 100% fluency rating, they will be moved onto the next topic.

Students can earn trophies based on different aspects of the game. For example, when a student can get a rating of 75% fluency in addition, they receive a bronze trophy. With each trophy a student earns, they get a certificate and a trophy coloring sheet printed for them. I always put their certificates on the wall for their classmates to see and be proud of.

The main goal of the game is to answer each question correctly within a six second time frame. When the student reaches 100% fluency with a six second answering speed, they will have earned another trophy and move on to the next topic. The order of the topics are (1) addition, (2) subtraction, (3) multiplication, and (4) division.

At the end of each round for the day, a chart will come up on the student's computer that shows them all of the questions they answered. Boxes that are marked green mean that a student is answering them correctly within the six second timeframe. Boxes that are yellow show the student questions in which they are answering correctly, but not within the six second timeframe. Boxes that are gray mean the questions were answered incorrectly.

When answering the questions, if the student types in the wrong answer, the correct answer will pop up on the screen and the student will have to type it in again. This helps with repetition in showing the student that they need to work on that specific problem.

The trophies, certificates, and coloring sheets are extremely motivating to students in order to encourage them to move on and try their best. They get extremely excited to show their classmates and I that they earned a trophy!

When a student passes a specific mark in the program they can earn trophies, certificates, and coloring sheets. This is an incentive to the students. When they earn a certificate, I tape it up on the wall in the hallway to show their classmates what they have just accomplished. It also encourages the other students to work on their fact fluency because they also want a certificate with their name taped on the wall in the hallway.

In addition to this, when they pass the entire program they have no more problems to solve since they conquered XtraMath. Those students who complete the entire program will have game time on their computers while their classmates work on XtraMath during that time in the morning. This also serves as an incentive to students.

Something that I love about the XtraMath program is that teachers have the ability to track the progress levels of their students. A student cannot lie to me and say that they got on XtraMath in the morning because if they were on and completed their skills for that day, there would be a green check beside their name.

The program also gives you a line graph that shows if the students are progressing or digressing in whatever particular math skill they are currently on. Teachers can also see data that pertains to the fact fluency percentage that each individual student is currently on.
