Memory foam mattress conforms to the shape of the body that lies on it, making it ideal for sleepers who are suffering from the constant back and hip pain. But is it best for side sleepers too?

What is Memory Foam?
Memory foam is a type of polyurethane foam designed in the mid-1960s for NASA’s airplane seats. It is highly soft and energy absorbent. And in response to the body heat and pressure, the foam molds to the body shape; meanwhile, the bodyweight is distributed evenly. When the pressure is removed, the foam returns to its original shape.
Since memory foam mattresses conform to the curves of the body, it offers great body support and quality comfort during sleep. For this reason, memory foam mattresses have become popular for every type of sleeper, except for hot and stomach sleepers.

So, is it ideal for side sleepers?
Because of the additional pressure placed on the pressure spots (shoulders, arms, and hips), side sleepers are always suffering from shoulder, neck, arm, and hip soreness or pain. Since memory foam mattresses are great for pressure point relief during sleep, side sleepers can take advantage of what memory foam mattresses can offer.

Here are few other reasons why side sleepers should consider replacing their traditional type of mattress with a memory foam mattress:

Reason #1: It helps promote a healthy sleep pattern
Most side sleepers would wake up in the middle of the night with muscle soreness on the part where they had slept for long hours. Unfortunately, not all side sleepers can easily fall back to sleep; therefore, frequent sleep interruption will cause alteration of sleep pattern, which may result in sleep deprivation or lack of enough quality sleep.

Fortunately, memory foam mattresses are designed to reduce or relieve the additional weight placed on the pressure points. Also, these types of mattresses offer great body support, which helps promote a healthy sleep pattern.

Reason #2: Less sleep interruption
A lot of the side sleepers are light sleepers, especially most of the athletic people. Thus, sleeping on a mattress with high motion transfer will cause frequent sleep interruption. And with frequently interrupted sleep it will cause a problem with sleep pattern. Problems with sleep patterns have a huge impact on everyday performance. Luckily, most of the memory foam mattresses are designed with motion isolation.

Motion isolation is the mattress's ability to absorb and isolate the motion from transferring from one side of the bed to the other sides. In other words, mattresses with high motion isolation will allow you to sleep comfortably without getting disturbed by any sudden movement or shift of positions from your bed sharer (another person on the bed or your pet).

So, if you are both a light sleeper and a side sleeper, you should shift your new mattress to a memory foam mattress; these are good for side sleepers.

But what happens if you are a side, light, and hot sleeper at the same time? Since memory foam absorbs heat, this type of mattress is not ideal for hot sleepers; instead, you may consider a hybrid mattress. Hybrid mattresses are built with two or three main materials such as memory foam, cooling gel, innerspring coils, and or latex.

Reason #3: It helps reduce pain and discomfort
As mentioned, a memory foam mattress can conform to the body shape; thus, it helps reduce pain and discomfort on the pressure points. More than that, memory foam mattresses offer optimal body support in the places that you need strength. For this reason, if you are a side sleeper suffering from joint pain and arthritis, a memory foam mattress is an ideal mattress for you.
