Says: " In the next land we found were Cyclopes, giants, lotus, with out a law to bless them"(56-57).
Means: This is the opening scene where Odysseus and his crew first found the islands where the Cyclops inhabit.
Matters: This is the set up for the plot. It is the opening that gives the setting, characters, and some parts of the story. The readers are able to predict the story just based of these ideas.

Says: "Old shipmates, friends, the rest of you stand by; I'll make the crossing in my own ship, with my own company..." (71-73)
Means: This quote is describing when Odysseus and his men arrive at the cyclopes' island.
Matters: It shows how he is a "hero" because he is allowing his men to stay behind while he goes and explores the island

I had a goatskin full of that sweet liquor that Euanthes' son, Maron had given me"(93-98).
Means: This quote is describing the plan Odysseus has to enter the Cyclops cave and "make friends" with him.
Matters: This is a continuation of the plot and is setting up for the future potential conflict against the Cyclops.

What brings you here by sea ways--a fair traffic?"(156-159)
Means: This is when the cylcops first comes back and finds Odysseus and his men inside his home
Matters: In this scene the cyclops, Polyphemus, is breaking Xenia by asking Odysseus and his men a bunch of questions about who they are and where they came from

The plan isn't bad either. His plan is a very well thought course of action to save his people.

Says: "When the young dawn on the finger tips of rose touched the world, I roused the men, gave orders for them to man the ships cast of the mooring lines.(478-480)
Means: This is the end of the story where Odysseus orders his men to take and escape with the Cyclops' goats.
Matters: This is the end of the whole story and we can see how Odysseus was a great leader, but was also very cocky like when he screams out his real name to the Cyclops to sort of brag. This ends up with the Cyclops being able to curse the boat.
