The reason that the Medium ground Finches' beak grew in size is because the drought on Daphne Major in 1977 washed away the small seeds, including the portulaca seed (which is small and easy to open). This left the birds with the tribulus seed (which is larger and harder to open) therefore, the finch needs a larger beak to be able to eat the seed. The drought washed away the smaller seeds because they were smaller and easier to be carried away, while the larger seeds were heavier and stayed put. All of this caused the population to decrease in the years of 1977 to 1978 because the finches with the smaller beaks started to die off sinch they couldn't eat the tribulus seed and the finches with larger beaks could survive since the larger beak made it easy for them to eat the tribulus seed. They got the nigger beaks by slowly adapting to their environment.
