In The Red Shoes by Hans Christian Andersen, the social issue of poverty plays a major role in shaping Karen’s life and choices. From the start, we see how Karen’s poor background limits her opportunities and even her basic comforts, such as when Andersen writes, “she was so poor, and in the winter, she had to use very large wooden shoes.” This detail shows the reader how she lacks even the most basic clothing and must endure the cold with oversized, uncomfortable shoes that are made of wood no less. Poverty, in Karen’s case, isn’t just about financial hardship; it can be interpreted as a root for feelings of attachment to material goods like the red shoes. This is seen when later in the story she can’t get her mind off of the red shoes. Her deep desire for the beautiful red shoes becomes a way to escape her past. However, as the story progresses, the shoes lead her down a tragic path wherein she becomes so attached to the shoes until they are unremovable. This teaches a lesson on of how poverty can make people vulnerable to choices that may not be in their best interest. Even in Toby’s society shoes such as “The Js’ a.k.a Jordens” are treated as a sort of Emblem of success and superiority.

When I was a young lad at the age of say 10 years or so, I was in a school/ area where shoes meant more than what car you drove. You could drive a dazzling Lamborghini but if you wore shoes from Walmart you might as well have been a broke beggar. In those days Nikes and Jorden’s were seen as the best “jumps” or best shoes. Everyone for the most part wore these shoes, everyone one but me and my pair of dirt-cheap converses. Apparently converse were “The bass player of the shoe band” and as such those kids absolutely tore me to shreds for it. This the “WHAT ARE THOSE?!” era which sums up the whole thing. Of course, I didn’t wear wooden shoes but like the girl in the story, but I can remember LITERALLY PRAYING once for some Jorden’s. I never got them and now I could care less. Thing is if 10-year-old me would’ve gotten those shoes he would’ve polished them like a mirror each time a dust particle got on them. I also might've danced everywhere to in those new shoes if I ever got them. In the regard of being unable to afford the best shoes as well as being attached to them once you get them is something I can relate to.
