SEO Cluster Navigation Strategy: To triple visits to your blog

Does your SEO strategy only revolve around keywords? If so, I'm sorry to tell you that you may be a bit outdated. But don't worry; in this article, I'm going to explain a "super strategy" so you can position those keywords that you've been dealing with for a long time and that you can't rank at all.

We will talk about nothing more and nothing less than the Topic Clusters strategy, also known as Cluster navigation. This method has become fashionable in recent years, especially with the rise of mobile web design (mobile-first design).

More than a strategy, it could be defined as a way of organizing content very effectively in terms of user experience and SEO.

This strategy has allowed me to penetrate competitive sectors and position keywords that I would not have been able to position otherwise. It is exciting when creating a blog and segmenting the categories into clusters, as we will see below.

The Google algorithm has been evolving over the years and has set the "rules of the game" with which SEOs have had to play.

Google has always tried to assess your site's content through parameters such as the domain's strength, the number of visits, the average time of the session, the car, the bounce rate, and many other variables.

We should already know that some criteria are gradually losing importance. Google is increasingly focused on the user and their behavior.

The cluster navigation strategy is a way of structuring the contents of your website that benefits the users who visit your website and the "Google algorithm," so we all win.

On the one hand, you focus your efforts on a set of content and "specialize" in a specific niche. The user is grateful for something since more and more people are looking for more detailed information.

On the other hand, you can create a content structure interconnected with each other through internal linking. This is very positive in the eyes of Google. See the following example.

As you can see, it is pretty simple to implement at a glance. It is about grouping content into segments and linking them together " logically. "

Topic Cluster Parts

This bundling method has three main components. Let's do a brief review of each of them.

Content Pillar

The content pillar or content pillar is the center of our cluster. In short, it is the page that includes the most important keywords, and that will cover the majority of search intentions.

The objective of this type of page is to position those contents that interest us the most, along with the related keywords.

navigation cluster

The Clusters are our blog/website pages that aim to promote these pillar contents and cover related topics in greater detail. In addition to the benefits of internal linking, it helps to increase the CTR.

Cluster Linking

Cluster linking aims to enhance those long-tail keywords that we want to position and the main keywords (from the content pillar).

Internal Link

With this approach, we delve into a specific topic to enable users to browse the clusters and find all the information they need.

It will do us very well to position long-tail keywords.

External link (backlinks)

I like to do internal and external linking with variations of keywords and synonyms without being too aggressive with the anchor text.

For example, if we are doing a cluster on wireless computer mice, we could use the following variations:

Wireless mouse

Wireless mouse

wireless peripherals

How to use a cluster strategy for your website

Let's see a straightforward example of practically implementing this type of strategy.

Suppose we have a "scholarships" section on our blog.

On the one hand, we have the central pillar, which would encompass those main keywords or main keywords that we are most interested in positioning.

Then, we link it with related content and those long-tail keywords that we want.

Of course, everything is connected by internal linking.

Advantages and disadvantages of the Cluster strategy

In my opinion, the content cluster strategy offers many more advantages than disadvantages. However, of course, it has both positive and negative aspects.

Advantages of the cluster strategy

It is an effective way to penetrate competitive sectors.

Due to the ease of navigation between clusters, you get an increase in CTR.

The structure is much more organized and optimized thanks to internal linking; this is beneficial for SEO.

Due to the high degree of specialization in a particular topic, you help search engines to know that you are an authority on a specific topic.

Disadvantages of the cluster strategy

Complex implementation in some pages or blogs. For example, news blogs, newspapers, or pages with very horizontal content.

Sometimes it can be a bit complicated to organize an effective link-building strategy in this type of strategy.

If you have many categories in your blog, it can mean a high cost of resources.

Conclusions

Although there is a whole science behind Cluster Navigation, it is quite logical from the organizational point of view of a web page and has been done for years. The first to name this method was the Hubspot team with the name of Topic Cluster.

This type of strategy is an excellent way to position content, even in sectors with a lot of competition. As I have mentioned several times, it is a perfect way to penetrate competitive market segments.

It should not be forgotten that clusters are an option for navigability in web design in mobile format, following the mobile-first design trend.

Cluster browsing is more effective than focusing all resources on a given keyword. Frankly, I think it's here to stay (until Google says otherwise).

And so far, the Navigation Clusters. Now it's your turn to implement it on your website.
