These routines also increase access to rigorous content as being able to speak and listen to others share offers students multiple modalities in which to absorb information. I have utilized think, pair, share, community circles, pass the stick/toss the ball, and philosophical chairs just to name a few. Students who are reluctant to speak have really bought into many of these speaking and listening routines and have felt more confident to share the next time. I can further develop these routines by continuing to foster this safe speaking space and adding new speaking and listening tools to my toolbox.
