The ROSA is used as a minimally invasive surgical treatment for epilepsy. It is linked to health care informatics in the way that it utilizes a patient's MRI to create a "map" of the patient's brain, allowing and providing guided precision for the surgeon. Initially, using the robot a number of electrodes are placed to determine the source of the seizures and electrical activity. Utilizing the patient's imaging, the robot uses guided trajectories to direct the surgeon on placing the electrodes. Once the cause is determined, a virtual GPS map of the brain is created to precisely guide surgeons through a small entry point to remove the lesion.

After personally seeing this technology in use in comparison to the previous treatment plan, I think this device serves as very beneficial to patients. The fact that it is less invasive and patient's recovery times are shorter proves to be a significant benefit. Observing the mapping capabilities of the ROSA validates the accuracy of the technology, thus providing optimal patient outcomes.

Traditionally for seizure treatment, patients would have to undergo a much more invasive procedure to determine the origin of the seizures. A craniotomy would be done to remove a portion of the skull in order to allow the surgeon to place a grid with electrodes. These previous grids did not allow the precision that the ROSA does, therefore the amount and location of the electrical activity was not as accurate.
