Marshall Plan 1947

Bay of Pigs Invasion 1959

Led by JFK in 1959 the US plan to invade Cuba and overthrow the communist government Fidel Castro failed. The Cuban troops had already settled in Bay of Pigs and started their attack right when the US first landed. This made JFk look weak, and Castro look powerful.

Berlin Airlift 1949

After WW2, Germany was split in half to be owned by US and USSR. This caused USSR to start the Berlin Blockade to prevent western influence. The US however did the Berlin Airlift which dropped resources into East Germany thus ending the Blockade.

Cuban Missile Crisis 1962

Nikita Khrushchev had placed missiles in Cuba to defend the Soviet Union which led to tension on the whole world. The Us had then also put missiles in Cuba in a defense attack. But after an agreement on both sides, Kennedy agreed to not invade Cuba. This was the closest point to a war.

NATO formed 1949

In April 1949, 12 countries in North American and Western Europe formed NATO as a security pact. NATO was formed to promote democratic values, help member nations on defense and prevent conflict.

Vietnam war 1954-1974

In an attempt to to preserve containment, the US involved itself in the Vietnam war which was in conflict to become communist as a whole. The Domino theory was the main reason for the US to send two million troops to fight the norther Vietnam. At the end however, South Vietnam fell to Communism.

Berlin Wall Erected 1961-1989

After WW2, Germany had been divided in half where the east was owned by USSR while the west was owned by western powers. Many eastern Germans fled Stalin's rule, this caused him to put up the Berlin wall to prevent this migration.

Korean War 1950

Korea was split in half after WW2, where North Korea went to USSR and South Korea went to US. North Korean leader Kim II Sung wanted to reunify Korea again, this led to proxy war. US backed South and USSR backed North.

In 1955, communist countries formed the Warsaw Pact. This was similar to NATO in where it helped protected communist country’s defense. The creation of the Warsaw Pact also led to USSR gaining a tighter control of other communist countries.
