I want to use this quote to launch SS bc sometimes I feel like teaching all the ways America is built on and through oppression makes it a hard country to love.   But we do have qualities to celebrate as a country and want our students to be part of its growth towards being better.  (The next pursuit - criticality - ends up addressing this more and connects to this quote as well."  Also connects to quote from pg. 103 "Knowing the oppressive history of the US means that cultivating intellect also entails the importance of restoring what has been taken from our African American people - thereby benefitting all people."

Now in retrospect, I realize that standardized tests are extremely biased and do not accurately our students'  performance or intellect.  
Another concept that resonated with me was the idea that we must "historize" knowledge in all content areas.  We must do our research regarding this because many people that all knowledge began and proliferated in Europe.  The contributions of Africans, Asians and indigenous people have been neglected or removed from the history books
.]]> 2021-04-29 18:54:28 UTC https://padlet.com/MsRennert/rstcf03n5y9elizn/wish/1475448186 JessicaFilazzolaJones https://padlet.com/MsRennert/rstcf03n5y9elizn/wish/1475452995 What stood out to me was the 2 anecdotes she included in the "High Stakes Testing" section (p.106-107).  When Michael calls the IQ test a "white racist test" because the test was created, written, and scored by white people - implying that it was not designed for Black children or others who did not live common experiences of White America.  Both the "cup and saucer" example and the "jihad" example really stood out to me as negligent on the part of the test creators.
