FACE MASK

I had learned and discuss in class in the first week which is Micro-plastic. I had discovered a lot about face mask since that topic had been discussed in the class. I had wore the mask for the past 2 years roughly since this pandemic attack. Before we did the discussion on class about this issue, I just wear those disposable face mask as advised by WHO and I do not really think the consequences in the long term. I also keep on throw my disposable face mask in any dustbin or recycle bin near me when I am outside.

To be honest, I had never made a research on this issue and I never thought that disposable mask are plastic-based like plastic bottles because it does not feel like plastic on my face. Now, I do find out that disposable face mask used micro-plastic in it that take hundred to thousand years to compose. It is also polluted the sea and increased its statistics since the covid-19 pandemic season and killed aquamarine life especially jellyfish.

In term of that, I do realize that my past attitude actually killed and destroyed the ecosystem and this is totally not sustainable. As the implication of that, I started to wear a fabric instead of disposable facemask and encourage my family to do so to save the environment. I do had segregated the regular trash can as well as the part for the face mask for my roomates as face mask cannot go through the same recycle as other plastic based product like plastic bottle. I hope I could help to clean the environment with being a role model towards my relatives and my surrounding and give them a consciousness.

Carbon Footprint from Email

Before i learn this subject, i was like others, living the best way of my life as i though everything was good and great. using those media social and think that it had nothing to do with environment. People nowadays lack of reading and they might know everything but surface or else, not the whole. So, before i learn this subject i already know about ecological footprint but i dont know the existence of carbon footprint and i dont even try to find it out. It seems like same thing but actually not. As i said earlier, we might know it but surface only.

So, after teachers class, i started to read on sustainability and unintentionally found an article that said email could effect environment and this is somenthing new to me. When I made some reading to know this, I found out that email is capable of leading to global warming which stems from the carbon footprint. how Most emails, including spam ones, unread ones, and those you simply forgot you never deleted are generally stored on the cloud. Cloud storage requires quite a lot of electricity, which in most parts of the world is still generated by fossil fuels. so for cloud use on regular email, this electricity is responsible for 4g of CO2 emissions. If it has a photo attachment, this requires additional storage and takes longer to ship, so the carbon footprint increases to an average of 50g. with this, the average carbon generated from the entire population of the earth using email is enormous and leads to global warming as is happening now. essentially, the carbon footprint is a gas restricted from everyday human practices.

I am aware of the fact that although the world is becoming more modern, the planned sustainable is difficult to achieve due to the lack of public awareness. as I said before, many are unaware that email can lead to global warming that will eventually destroy the earth. so, some of the things I do to reduce the human -generated carbon footprint are by deleting unused emails. Before I found out about this carbon footprint, I just let every single email I receive and even hundreds of unread emails. with this effort, at least I can provide services even if it is not much but this small effort is able to affect the rate of carbon footprint produced.
