One of the main activities we will do is to improve agility. This will include an exercise which the students will participate in together as groups of three. They will run up to an agility ladder, placed on the floor, step through each of the squares as they go through. Then, there will be 4 cones placed in front of the ladder which the student will need to run in and out of before being thrown by another student a ball, that they will shoot into a goal. There is a goal keeper, and after the student shoots their ball into the goal, the goal keeper goes to the other end of the line by the ladder and waits for their turn. The student who passes the ball will become the goal keeper, and the shooter will become the person that throws the ball. This exercise will take approximately 10 minutes.

The students swap postions and shoot which makes everyone try different roles which are the passer and the shooter and each person needs to have done at least 3 times when role. This exercise is very good for the students in controlling the ball but also in improving therefore their agility

This exercise will take the skills that the students had learnt in the previous exercise and out it into a more game like situation. It starts with a ball being placed 20 metres away from the goal and the students each standing 5 metres away from the football as well. When the whistle is blows, each student will need to run as fast as possible to the ball. Then, the student that touches the ball first will make their way to the goal. As this is happening, the following students will nee to spread out and be “helpers” for the player with the ball, and is not aloud to try to steal the ball. If any of the players without the ball get to close to the player with the ball, the referee/coaches will call their names and they will need to do the "punishment" that was decided in the beginning of the lesson by the students (eg, pushups, situps, etc). There will be a cone in front of the goal, the player with the ball will need to decide to either pass to one of the "helpers" and they can shoot or dribble around the cone by themselves and then shoot or pass.

This task will teach the students the importance of spreading out and getting into good positions so that their teammates can pass to them. In addition to that, it will also improve their skills in dribbling, passing and shooting under pressure with control.

First Exercise (5 Minutes) - Warming Up and Control

5 minutes: This is a warm up exercise which teaches the players to use different areas of their body to control the ball. Although the main aim of the lesson is to learn how to control it on the floor this is a good start and warmup to get the players thinking about what control is. In pairs one person holds the ball and is ready to throw it to the other player and tells them clearly what part of their body they need to control the ball with (Example: Head, Knee, Chest). Once the player who has caught the ball they cannot move and the player who threw the ball has to run to the opposite line and back to get warmed up. Then they switch places and the other player runs. This activity is effective in communication as players have to tell each other where to control the ball and the players have to be ready to receive it which will improve their balance because they have to be ready on their feet.

Second Exercise (15 Minutes) - Spacial Awareness and Small Touches

10 minutes: The players run one by one in a zigzag motion around the 4 cones with the ball in one half of the field. 5-6 balls will be used and the cones will be quite close together. This will require small touches to change the angle at which they are running. After running around the cones with the ball, they will leave the ball near the last cone, but not to close so that it doesn’t cause another person to trip. The leaders of the group will stand opposite each other near the last cone so they can keep the ball while the player does a quick step ladder drill. The leader will then pass the ball to the player and the player will join the back of the line. This activity is effective in achieving our goal because it requires control to make short quick touches around cones, it also keeps the player warm during cold weather because of the ladder. This activity can also help improve balance when controlling the ball around the cones. Because if you lean to one side you wouldn’t be able to do the small touches.

5 minutes: To take this exercise a step further, defenders will be added instead of the ladder so the player is required to pass the defender after the cone section of the exercise. The defender won’t stand very close to the cone and will leave a space. And then for a shooting aspect which is not the main focus but is still important, the player will attempt to shoot after passing the defender. The defender will stay the same for 2 or so minutes and then they will switch. The defender can also be the leader of the exercise. This will improve their spacial awareness because they have to pass the defender and see where the defender is.

Third Exercise (10 Minutes) - Keep Ball

10 minutes: The players will be split in two teams and play a few rounds of keep ball. This exercise will be very important because it ties to the different match situations which is the final part of the aim of the lesson. This is done right before the players play their match, this will make it easier for them to apply it since they have just learned it. The aim of keep ball is that there are two teams and they both want to keep the ball and intercept it when it's the other team’s. This will improve their spacial awareness and it will require for them to take a touch and control the ball with their feet so that the other team doesn't get it. This will be played for a few minutes, when players have understood this well it can be made harder. It can be made harder by:

decreasing the space that it is played in, therefore the players have to be even more aware of the limited space and to keep the ball in the area. This increases the pressure so that players will be able to control the ball with players closer to them

limiting the number of touches a player can take for example 3 touches and then to make it even harder 2. This will make the player aware that they need to control the ball with a limited amount of touches, requiring them to have a high skill and ability in control. It will raise their accuracy in controlling and they will learn to play with fewer touches

It can be made more competitive by saying 10 touches = 1 point. This creates an ambition and a goal so that players play in a competitive atmosphere because they want to score a point. This will help them deal with pressure in a match situation.

Variations a,b,c or any other ones will be chosen according to the ability, capability, skill and progression of the team seen in the first 20 minutes of the lesson.

Once everyone is warmed up, we will have everyone come in and we will read out the learning objectives to them and ask them what they hope to get out of the lesson.

One of us will start by demonstrating a proper throw-in and make sure that they understand how it is done. A throw-in is done by keeping both feet on the floor, with both hands on the ball and thrown overhead. It is okay to take a few steps before the throw, as long as the back foot stays on the ground.

Next, the group will divide into partners and practice throwing the ball in. The receiving partner will receive the ball to themselves with either their head, chest, knee, or foot.

After everyone has practiced throwing and receiving, they will then try to score a goal after receiving the ball from the throw-in. Then, to make it harder, we might play as defenders once they get the hang of it.

Next, we will practice corner kicks. First, we will explain that it is a corner kick when someone on the defending team lets it past the goal line, and if it was the opposing team, it would be a goal kick. The whole group will line up at one of the corners except for one who will be in position to receive a pass. The first person in line will pass to that player and the receiver will try to then score. After the ball is scored, the kicker will stay to receive the next pass, and the person who scored will go to the back of the line. Again, once the group gets that down, we will make it more realistic and add defenders.

Aim of our lesson: In our lesson we want to focus on agility and the quickness of the game. We want to be able to improve the speed of which the ball is moved around the pitch. The quickest way of moving the ball is by passing although, it is also important to keep moving at all times. Therefore in our lesson, we will practise passing and work on quick feet. If the students start to pass to each other more, it means that they will be able to spread more into space instead of all crowding around the ball.

Skills developed in this lesson:
Spacial Awareness
Communication
Agility
Passing
Control

Exercise 1:In our first activity, we are going to focus on agility and appropriate ways of hitting the ball depending on the situation. The activity works by the students lining up in two lines. One of the lines has a ladder in front of it and the other one has 5 obstacles. They will use quick steps to run over the ladder and once they get to the other side, we will throw the ball to them. We will throw the ball at head-height, chest-height or knee-height. The students will have to hit the ball according to how it is thrown.

Exercise 2: In our second activity, the students will go in two lines facing each other. There will be around a 10 meter distance between the two lines. One person will start with the ball and then pass to the person in the front of the line on the other side. This is a quick warmup up drill for passing in order to attain the control needed. This exercise is supposed to move quickly and so it is alike a real match situation.

In the third activity we will play a small game of 3 attackers vs 2 defenders. Even though, being quick on your feet is a fast way of getting around in the sport, the quickest way of getting the ball to the goal is by passing quickly and constantly. The game will be played with no feet. They will play a quick round of handball and the person holding the ball cannot move. After a few rounds they will swap around their positions. They will then play the same exercise with their feet in order to see if they could improve their use of space in order to be able to be passed to and making the game quicker.

Students are going to stand in a large square and pass balls to each other. This will be done by a student retrieving the ball from another player and then the student should control the ball, take it half-way down the side of the square and then passing it to the next player. This will also happen on the opposite side of the other square allowing a fast pace to the activity keeping the students warm and so that the activity has some aspect of an in-game situation.
This activity will really focus on developing and improving skills which can then be further applied in the following exercises.

This exercise will consist of one player passing to another player. This player will then attempt to score a goal. This exercise will focus more on shooting skills and where the most strategic place is to shoot into the goal and how to achieve that.
After every student has had several attempts, 2 defenders will be added in. The passing player can now also attempt to score. The two players should work together to score and out-smart the defenders. This will allow the activity be more like a real-life situation.

The last exercise will simply consist of a 3-touch game.
This will allow the students to apply their previously improved skills and apply them in a game-situation. This exercise will mostly focus on passing the ball around which is why the 3-touch rule is added. This exercise will also allow students to move into open spaces so that a player can pass to them. Even though this is not a lesson objective, it is still a skill which could be improved.
