Another Great Day in the Office by Kaylynn

Argued as considerably one of the greatest television shows of our time, and has a decent amount of memes streaming the media, the NBC network’s The Office has provided both comic relief and valuable teaching moments for our day-to-day lives. When examining how the roles of communication applies to the show, viewers are exposed to the many relationships among the office and how they affect their time at work. Specifically examining the relationships that take place at Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, viewers are provided the relationship of Jim Halpert and Pam Beesely. Going through many twists and turns over the course of the series, we as communication majors apply the relationship of Jim and Pam to the Developmental Perspective Model. This model takes a relationship that one might have, and breaks it down into “the rise and fall of relationships into ten stages, contained in the two broad phases of “coming together” and “coming apart”” (Adler, 293). Since the series ended with their relationship to only a positive ending, we decided to focus on only the “coming together” part of the model.

In the first stages of the most-beloved relationship in the office, Pam and Jim use mainly nonverbal gestures to communicate from their desks. They also use forms of immediacy which refers to the degree of interest and attention that we feel toward and communicate to others.

A great deal of immediacy comes from nonverbal behavior such as eye contact, facial expressions, tone of voice, and the distance we put between ourselves and others.Gestures such as head nods and eye contact are used commonly when they bond over messing with Dwight, a co-worker that despises yet has a love-hate relationship with Jim and Pam.

In the experimenting stage we have made contact with a new person, the next stage is to decide whether we are interested in pursuing the relationship further. This involves Uncertainty Reduction - the process of getting to know others by gaining more information about them. Types of Relational Messages have a great variety of content messages. Within the show "The Office" Jim and Pam are stuck in the experimenting stage for quite a while.

Metacommunication describes the messages that people exchange verbally or nonverbally about their relationship. Metacommunication can include tone of voice, body language, facial expressions, or gestures. Jim and Pam express metacommunication by messing with Dwight during every episode.

In this part of "THE OFFICE" Jim and Pam are dating. They began after Pam admitted that she called off her wedding because she cared about Jim at an office beach day. Soon after Jim split from his relationship and started one with Pam, who he had already confessed his love to. The two started dating and later became an exclusive couple within the office.

The intensifying stage is when a relationship has reached a more point where the couple speaks much more and they begin to express their feelings more frequently. A couple in the intensifying stage also discuss their state of relationship much more often.

During this relationship Emotional Support begins to be apparent. As seen between Jim and Pam, there is sense of empathy when troubles rise. The two truly care about each other. Both people in a relationship involving emotional support respond in caring ways, such as when Pam goes to college and Jim is willing to talk with her on the phone and go visit her in order to support her journey through college.

In the intensifying stage their is always some sort of accommodating. This is a lose-win situation where you give up something in order to fulfill the needs or wants of another person. Jim and Pam both do this when it comes to distance. At one point Jim must accommodate Pam's want to go to college even though he loves her and wants her to stay. The same happens to Pam when Jim leaves the office for a while in order to take another job. both times they give up their wants to accommodate what the other wants.
