The table illustrates the number of international visitors (in millions) to ten selected countries in 2009 and 2010, along with the percentage change over this period.

It is clear that France consistently attracted the highest number of tourists, while Germany recorded the most significant relative growth. In contrast, Hong Kong was the only destination to suffer a decline in visitor numbers.

France remained the top destination, maintaining 76 million tourists across both years. The United States ranked second with a modest rise from 66 to 67 million (1.5%). Similarly, Spain and the UK experienced marginal increases, with the UK’s figure growing slightly more significantly by 3.6%.

In the mid-range, Italy saw a 2.5% increase, moving from 44 to 45 million tourists. More substantial growth was recorded in Turkey (32 to 46 million, up 33%) and China (22 to 34 million, a 55% increase). However, Germany experienced the most dramatic surge, with tourist arrivals more than doubling from 10 to 24 million, reflecting a 109% jump.

On the other end of the spectrum, Hong Kong’s figures dropped by 11%, from 10 to 9 million, making it the only country to register a decline during the period.

While Western European countries largely retained their lead in tourist numbers, emerging destinations such as China, Turkey, and especially Germany saw significant gains, suggesting a shift in global travel patterns.
