180422

One key takeaway I got was the importance to take pride in our service to Singapore. Although the security trooper vocation is not the most glamorous, that does not dilute the necessity of defending SAF establishments. Our role in island defence enables other vocations to perform their duties with peace of mind, and as security troopers, we should always be committed to our job and strive for excellence, which is what I aspire to be in the time to come. The past 9 weeks of BMT have taught me to be more disciplined and provided me with valuable skills and knowledge that will prove useful in the future.

As we are responsible for safety of the camps, we cannot afford to let our guard down and compromise our security checks merely for the sake of convenience. We should also be very familiar with SOPs such that when a situation arises, we will be well equipped to swiftly respond to it, so that it will be resolved as quickly as possible. I also learnt on which items to draw for PAC, VAC as well as when turnout is called for.

I am quite clear on my roles and what to do during different situations

Beyond the hands on aspect, it helped me better appreciate the necessary action security troopers may have to take and served as a reminder to never be complacent. However, during initial inspection, I realized I forgot to bring some items, showing me how absent minded I can be. As we have learnt our knowledge through Mowbray Camp for vocation training, we can apply what we learnt easily to UIP. However, in UIP it is slightly challenging as 8 SIR has different methods like VAC, baton deployment and Search and Arrest searches. My favourite starion would be the baton station as I am from School V and under Pes E9 so we did not try the shield before. Even hitting the dummy was not allowed in Mowbray due to being E9 so I had the most fun in the baton station today.

- I learnt that I’m ready to be a vigilant and ever ready Service security trooper. Through the various currency lessons today, I was reminded of the skills I possess to carry out my duties effectively. From VAC and PAC to search and arrest, the fundamentals drilled into me during the ST SVC course has not gone to waste. I am ready to stand vigilant at my camp/base (hopefully 24/7)
- the most challenging station for me was the VAC station, for the sole reason of manoeuvring the under carriage mirror. I found it hard to angle it properly and spot the entire under carriage. The fear of scrapping the undercarriage was also a hesitating factor. That being said, I managed to get my angles better after practise, and I’m positive that with more experience in VAC duties, I’ll be able to handle the mirror smoothly and swiftly; to protect my camps, bases and KINs

- Something I did well in today would have to be the critical thinking I possessed when it came to responding to the different guard room scenarios. I would often be the one who’s guiding or hinting to my other group mates on how to properly respond to different scenarios in VAC, PAC and even the Pass office. I was able to think not only fast but fluidly as well, adapting to the variations in situations; combining both what I instinctively thought was the best course of action as well as the protocols I learned throughout my course and UIP. One way I think I can improve is to be more assertive in my commands when speaking to intruders or suspects. My commanders told me that I was too lenient in my warnings and tone, and that would be a dangerous mistake in a risky situation. I plan to improve on this by training myself to be more serious
- One setback I faced today was using the metal detector. I was confused at first and didn’t notice it beep when scanning a suspect’s stomach area. It turned out that he hid his wallet there but my lack of focus missed. If given the same type of situation again, I will be more attentive and focused on each minuscule detail of my search to ensure no stone is left unturned and that I do not miss any threat that someone may bring into my camp

210422
Today in the vigilance test, I think I did well overall in all but I think I can do btr in terms of confidence in my decisions as I tend to doubt myself often, that's when things start to get messy snd I start to hesitate. I should always confirm with the guard commander instantly if I'm having doubts. I think even though today is a good learning session. I believe practice like this should be done more often compared to theory lessons as we can drill scenarios like this into our head and we're able to react correspondingly if things ever happen in camp. I hope if I ever encounter such a situation again, I can be more confident in y actions and decisions to handle things by myself.

21/04/22

Overall I felt that Vigilance Challenge was very interesting and I to experience the stresses in working in a GR first hand, especially during high threat situations. I think in general we as GR4 were very proactive and after the first couple of injects were able to be assertive and communicate better with each other especially between the VAC, PAC and GR.

This was due to our initial errors in lack of assertion and communication which we were quickly able to rectify and perform better in our later injects.

However, what we repeatedly did not follow was moving in pairs especially when there ia a turn out to engage situations like knife threat or run ins. We should be more mindful about moving with our buddies especially when confronting an armed person.

210422 (Thurs):

In the vigilance challenge, what I did well was:
- Informing GC on people loitering outside camp as a VAC
- Informing GC on a person taking photos outside the camp and getting his description and particulars so turn out personnel and GC can get hold of the people to delete the camp photos as a PAC
- Doing routine frisk searches as a PAC
- Assisting to search, arrest and detain a person for running into camp without scanning and getting scanned by the metal detector
- Showing how to do a VAC level 1 and 2 search to all duty personnel so that everyone understood the procedures
- Being quick for turn outs for any scenarios

As for setbacks and areas for improvement, as I was the first few person on duty, I did not sound firm enough, however after that scenario I became more firm and confident which was the improvement. Next, it was the turning out where I chase after the person who ran into camp. How i can work in it is to turn out together first before chasing for the person so that the description will be much clearer. Also, a person held a hostage with a knife and pushed his way into camp and my team tried to stop him but we step back every time he inched forward. What I can do was to move myself to his back so once I have the opportunity, I could disarm the knife from his hand.
