Modern Studies is about supporting and encouraging children to expand their horizons beyond the school, into the neighbourhood and the wider world. Modern Studies builds upon the existing interactions within the learner’s Microsystem and Mesosytem in order to establish a foundation which enables them to branch out to encounter new, enriching experiences in adulthood

By approaching Modern Studies in a concrete, thematical way, such as exploring basic economic principles which relate to children’s lives, it promotes civic competence as they experience and develop the knowledge, intellectual processes, and democratic dispositions which enable them to be active and engaged participants within society. Therefore, Modern Studies encourages learners to become Responsible Citizens and Effective Contributors through a range of meaningful experiences and valuable skills, such as solving problems, making decisions, managing emotions, taking the perspectives of others, and pursuing and achieving goals.

Modern Studies is a significant aspect of our curriculum as it assists learners in comprehending the social, political, and economic environments in which they live. Learning about modern studies is an extremely beneficial aspect of your child’s learning as it will enable them to gain skills that they can apply to other curriculum areas, such as analysing different sorts of sources and evidence to indicate bias, exaggeration, or selectivity in the use of facts, and comparing and contrasting opinions to form accurate conclusions. Additionally, through the modern studies curriculum your child will be able to develop their communication skills, benefiting them in their future workplace, such as literacy abilities related to reading, writing, and speaking, as well as presentation skills. Now more than ever we live in a time when it is more important than ever to be engaged politically. Therefore, modern studies will give your child the opportunity to learn skills that will help them such as developing informed decisions, informed discussion and debate, and investigating / research strategies.

Modern Studies is the study of contemporary political and social issues in a variety of local, Scottish, United Kingdom and international contexts. In relation to Curriculum for Excellence, Modern Studies is within Social Studies and is considered the study of “People in society, economy and business”.

The purpose of the teaching and learning of Modern Studies in primary education is to develop an awareness of world matters and their community around them. This curricular area highlights key concerns such as equality and our rights and responsibilities to be active contributing members of society and does so through underpinning what our role is and how we do so. Moreover, this subject being taught within primary education highlights vital lifelong skills being enhanced as children are able to make decisions and have opinions on matters that affect them and the world around them.

Modern studies being taught at early level is significant as children are able to identify from early learning who the key roles are within their community. They can adopt a sense of responsibility whilst being able to engage within these roles in learning activities. Another example within practice is children understanding their rights and why we have them, this can be looked at through their classroom charter.

Modern studies is the study of what is happening in the world around us. It is a mixture of politics, sociology and economics which looks at different aspects of society. Within the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence, Modern Studies comes under Social Studies and is considered the study of people in society, economy and business. Examples of what it can include is looking at the community around the school or looking at rights (children’s right to play). The purpose of learning about this is that it allows children to gain an essential awareness into what is going on around them, locally and globally.

Modern Studies focuses on the world we live in today. It covers, at an early level, a wide variety of issues, such as membership in a democratic classroom community, location and place relationships, similarities and differences in personal and family characteristics, basic economic principles as they relate to children’s lives, and appreciation of one’s own and other cultures in a diverse society.

It is therefore essential for your child to explore and understand the range of topic Modern Studies offers. These topics create opportunities for your child to interact with other individuals, which is preparing them to form relationships throughout their life. All students will also begin to understand and acknowledge diversity, through the teacher modelling equal and fair relationships. This helps tackle prejudice in society at a very early age. Additionally, your child will also be able to attend field trips and listen to visitors within the classroom, which can expand their awareness of people and roles in their community. Students will also develop an economic understanding, helping them understand transactions and the relationship between money and work. Ultimately, studying Modern Studies at an early level is essential for your child as it aids in the development of key life skills.

Modern Studies is one of three social subjects, arguably the most important one when it comes to developing essential everyday skills. It is important for your child to develop an understanding of society, whether that may be the society in which they live and grow in or the wider society they are a part of, the world. They should be able to comprehend what issues surround them and be able to make decisions and choices, as well as create their own thoughts and ideas on these issues by learning what is important. They will be able to view and understand their own rights as human beings and be more aware of these, possibly being able to make everyday decisions based on this. They will also be exposed to politics, economics, the idea of power and sociology, as well as looking at important affairs such as equality. Everything your child learns will prove to be useful to their every day lives as they eventually develop into young adults, and by exposing them at such a young age, they will develop a deep awareness of key concepts and issues that we see and come face to face with every day.

They will be able to identify these issues as they hear and see them in our society, whether that may be on the news, or from family members and wider society discussions. Modern Studies will allow your child to develop essential skills such as communication, critical thinking, decision making and understanding and respecting other's views, ideas and perspectives, even if this is different from their own, which is why this subject is vital and important to your child and all young people in today's society.
