I cannot say that I have received a message that foretold anything, especially the murder of a man. He picks up the oranges along with the others, but they find he has vanished. A father and son dash out after him, and seconds later Holmes cries, "Help! Help! Murder!" He had solved the case and deduced where the rest of the paper was, and the father and son were the murderers. He arranges them to wait concealed until the friend of Douglas, Barker, fishes up a small package weighted with a dumbbell found to be missing by Holmes. Holmes reveals that Douglas is still alive, and the one who was killed was the killer. He weighted the clothing articles and possessions of the assassin with the dumbbell and sunk it in the moat around the house. Edwards is presumed to enter and be trapped by the murderers; McMurdo comes back and states that he is Birdy Edwards. It is revealed he was chosen to break up the society and had deceived to gather enough information to go to court with them. At the end, it was revealed they wanted to get Wilson out of his house because they were digging a tunnel to a nearby bank which was storing upwards of 490000 pounds worth of Napoleons (4900000 today). Though Holmes has solved the mystery, we do not know what had happened or what he will do next due to the point of view being from Dr. Watson. The presence of the whistle and the clang after her death worries Stoner, as now she is hearing it again. Holmes goes to the house and investigates all three rooms and immediately solves the mystery, though he does not tell Dr. Watson. The solution is that Roylott had a snake that he would put into a fake ventilator connecting between his room and the next, which would climb down a false bell-pull onto the bed and kill the victim. The whistling was to beckon the snake back, and the clang was shutting it into his safe. The motive was to take the wills that would be given on their marriage. However, the dealers had another goose with a barred tail; he had bought the wrong goose, and when he came back for the other one it had already been sold.
