The rebel army made up of Tutsi soldiers furthered the growing economic tensions when they invaded Rwanda, but the real violence began when they killed the Hutu president in an attempt to overthrow their government which plunged Rwanda into chaos. This happened because the poverty and the scarcity of land played into the hands of politicians seeking to further their power by igniting ethnic tensions between groups. Hutu extremists blamed and accused all Tutsis of supporting the rebels operating outside of the country and made it their goal to exterminate them.

Reconciliation
Though many efforts have been made to fix the broken Rwanda, the memories of the Genocide are still strong in peoples minds and the country isn’t as unified as it once was. Prior to the genocide, classes flourished together and now many people still live in fear and those who don’,t still have the violence in their minds.

Punishment
Though the conspirators cannot suffer enough for their acts of terror, 50 of the top organizers from the genocide were able to be tried, including a high ranking conspirator, Théoneste Bagosora. Additionally, by 2000, over 120,000 people were awaiting trial for their crimes. It may bring some people peace knowing that justice has been served for many of those who were involved in these atrocities.

Since the the entire Genocide was planned out and had an order of events, Government officials and Hutu extremists knew these plans and once the Hutus were given a signal, the 100 day genocide began. Then, the extermination, the days were filled with merciless slaughter. The Genocide started with the organization of it, Civilian death squads were trained in advance to commit malicious massacres and killings, these death squads even ended up being responsible for the most deaths caused. In the streets, people were hacked to death and dismembered by Machetes, children were murdered, and people hiding places were revealed by a nation wide radio signal.

During the Genocide, countries were reluctant to step in, and all eyes were on the US. Though Rwandan people made efforts to contact the US before the killings, the US told them to deal with it themselves amongst their own leadership but little did the Rwandan government know, their own officials were in on the plan. Even with the warning the US stayed out, then the violence began and the US still stayed out. The US proclaimed that what was happening in Rwanda were no more than ethnic tensions that would be settled themselves, it is later figured out that the US didn't want to classify it as a Genocide because then under international rule, they'd have to step in.
It was only until after the fighting that the US sent in some troops to help protect the over 1,000,000+ refugees left in a destroyed country.
