For instance, the small kebob house is described thoroughly based on its touch, smell, and sight: "The floor is sticky and the air smoky. The wells smelled filthy of raw meat and the music was loud." The author incorporates these sensory descriptions to create a loud, festive environment bustling with people. Also, the words, "sticky," "smoky," "filthy," and "loud," create an antipathetic tone.
Mariam's response to this setting, as revealed by the 3rd person omniscient narrator, further defines Mariam's identity. Visiting a restaurant for the first time in her life, Mariam "found it odd at first to sit in a crowded room with so many strangers." Her discomfort with the crowd of people suggests Mariam is accustomed to and enjoys solitude more than companionship.
