Salva is forced to march with these rebels but after one day he is abandoned in a barn. Salva's primary concern at this point is to find his family and get back home.  He wanders around for a short time but eventually stays with a kind old woman.

Marial who is a young member of the Jur-chol and forced out of his village has a lot in common with Salva. This is why Salva and Marial instantly become friends. They have no one else with them on the journey so they have to stick together to survive and walk with eachother each day. A young boy, Marial is Salva's only friend early on in the refugee crisis.

After escaping the Sudanese war Salva finds refugee at the Itang Refugee Camp. He lives here for about 6 years. Though after some time the camp was too crowded. Also there was no more money to support the camp because Ethiopia no longer wanted to support any of the camps in their country. Because of all this one day the army of Eithiopia raids the camp forcing them out of Eiothipia to Sudan. After nearly dying Salva leads a group of around 1,500 boys to Kenya where he has heard of a new refugee camp. Finally after a year and a half they arrive.

They also become friends, playing volleyball together.  Salva admires Michael, knowing that Michael pays attention to him when no one else would and Salva wants to do the same.

Salva was separated from his family during a civil war in what is now South Sudan. He has to walk for weeks with only the hope that one day he will find his family again. After being adopted he later, finds out his father is still alive in Southern Sudan but is suffering with disease caused by waterborne parasites. When he arrives in Sudan his father tells him that most of his family survived including his mom.

All people have a right to education and when Salva has to give up school and travel to a refugee camp. Although this changes once he gets to the refugee camp. He starts to get taught English and starts playing volleyball. Although, you cant really consider that education. Even though he knows English, if he restarted school he would have to restart some of middle school and high school.
His right to education was violated.

Salva has to leave his country to seek refuge and safety from the war. When his home in not safe anymore, he has to leave his country to seek refugee in Ethiopia, and then in Kenya. If he did not have this right the country could have denied him and he would not have been able to have a successful future.
