Since day 1, I have a much wider understanding of the large variety of music magazines. For example, pop magazines usually consist of brightcolours, different shaped font, buzzwords, various graphic images and popartists images on the front cover. But within this genre, there are many sub-geners with subtle differences such as youngpop magazines are usually cluttered with lots of information packed into the frontcolour to attract the younger audience where as older pop magazines have more of a timeless feel, with maybe a older celebrity on the front cover and it being less cluttered.

DANCE MAGAZINES

Dance magazines would have brightened powerful colours that would reflect a 'club like feel' due to the coloured lights. They would have puffs and graphic images ofcelebrity gossip as dance magazines would be mainly aimed at young women aged 18+. There would be a main image most likely to be a young woman that is currently in the music industry that sings dance music along with an ‘exclusive’ interview. The magazine would be cluttered which would reflect the people who go clubbing as they would like to think they have a crazy ‘cluttered’ lifestyle. The masthead would be bright and bold to attract people to buy the magazine against all the other dance magazine competitors.

INDIE MAGAZINES

An indie magazine would have a simple masthead and the masthead title would be large and take up the whole top section so that it is easy to spot on the shelves amongst the other magazine competitors. The main image would have a current band or musician as most indie music is aimed at the younger generation. There would be a lot of puffs with other band names and current news in the indie industry. There could also be other graphic images of other indie bands that are also current and this would attract the consumers as it doesn’t feature just one band or musician. The colours would be dark and neutral as indie can be like rock but it is not as heavy and loud as rock so the colours would reflect on the magazine. Indie is also not as messy as rock so that would also reflect on the magazine as it would not be as crowded or cluttered as the other magazines such as pop and rock.

ROCK AND HEAVY METAL MAGAZINES

Rock and heavy metal magazine front covers would usually use dark colours as heavy metal is quite a dark type of genre of music. They also would have a lot of clutter like in the pop magazines because heavy metal readers and their music would be seen as mad and messy so it would reflect onto the magazine front covers. They would also have big bold writing and buzz words to attract their type of reader. The central image would not necessarily have a current artist or band but a well known one such as Queen, one that will be remembered for a long time and is extremely famous.

Target Audience: Older people - it's a magazine for mature music lovers, not teens and young adults, it shows respect for the history of music and features iconic artists.

Q focus’ on more of a generation than a Genre. Q represents the older generation as they have been ignored. Q is a magazine for the older generation but also targeted at people who are interested in modern music as well as the iconic music which was around. The general ideology shows the greatness of music all aspects of genres and generations. It more or less focuses on the well known bands more than new upcoming bands as they know there readers want to read about music of there generation so new upcoming bands would only come into the younger generation.

Target Audience: Targeting a specific genre.

Mojo is for rock lovers, but is more interested in Classic rock. The age range would be around 35 and over and both genders. Mojo focus’ on a genre of music and the magazine is a representation of it. It focus’ on the love for classic rock and the artists/bands involved. Mojo targets it’s audience by concentrating on classic rock e.g : Boy Dylan, Pink Floyd, The White Stripes, Guns and roses etc. The ideology of Mojo is showing that rock music also has a value due to the amount of classic rock artists. It focus’ on having more articles in then it does with reviews of gig and festivals like Kerrang does. Normally MOJO would feature more older and wiser Bands/Artists.

Kerrang concentrates on punk/rock/metal bands. Kerrang keeps their audience interested by having articles and reviews in about bands, gigs and festivals. Every week, Kerrang magazine has a big focus on a different band new, old or upcoming and has either one or two double page spreads. Unlike Q and MOJO, Kerrang’s ideology is set on rebelling against the classic hard rock views. Kerrang Focus’ is the rock/metal/punk bands that are recent or new and sometimes classic.

I am now more aware of the codes and conventions of what music magazines use and how they aim to reach their audience. I have also noticed what is a common theme in all magazines such as having a clear masthead and most have a large main image.
