Abu al-Qasim is credited with developing an early form of surgical anesthesia using opium and mandrake. He described the use of this anesthesia in his comprehensive medical encyclopedia "Kitab al-Tasrif." He described how to administer the anesthesia to the patients before surgery in order to reduce pain and discomfort during the procedure. Opium, which is derived from the opium poppy, has been used for centuries as a pain reliever and sedative. Mandrake is a plant that has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly for its sedative and analgesic properties. By combining these two substances, Abu al-Qasim was able to create anesthesia that was effective in reducing pain and discomfort during surgery. This represents an important step forward in the history of medicine.
