Reece: I think the answer to the first question depends on how you are looking at race. If you are a scientist, you are going to look at race as the biological difference between individuals, such as the difference in skin pigments. If you are a politician, you are going to most often look at race as a social construct. I also think race can be useful when looking at genetic disease differences if the disease you are studying is better at infecting a certain race, but I don't know if that is the case with covid.

I think that in most cases, race could be considered more of a social concept, however I do know that different races are more or less susceptible to genetic diseases so I am generally unsure.

I think there are minor biological differences (that don't make any race better or worse) between races because of geographic locations. However, in terms of racism and how race has been used to give/take away power, that is purely a social thing. I think geographic location and other metrics are much more useful for investigating disease differences.

I think race is very much social. An example of this every 10 years the government takes a survey to identify race populations called a census. As a result of this survey we can analysis outcomes of communities which differ from one another and decided how and where to disperse social services.

Zach: In response to the first question, I believe race is both biological and social. There is a developed system in the field of science that tells us that race is defined by ones characteristics (ie. Skin color), but it can also be defined by how you see someone.

Looking at the science of the small differences that exist between them, yes, race is biological. These biological differences don't make any one race better or worse than the other. However, race is mostly a social thing.

Depending on how you think about it race can be social or scientific. If you saw someones skin color and it differed from what society portrays as the skin color of that race, race would be a social construct. But scientifically, race is just how different people from different countries look different and have different cultures and traditions. Scientific race can also explain genetic diseases like malaria and asthma as well.

I think that it really depends on how you view race. Yes, race can be looked at scientifically, but it also can be viewed as a social construct, so it really depends.
