It has been beneficial and insightful to learn directly from the students about the school community and culture.   • Show congruence: when the counselor is genuine and remains authentic. It allows the student to build a close relationship with the counselor (Person-Centered Theory)
  • When students come in for minor questions or concerns, I always make it a point to ask them about their day, how their classes are going, and bring up something positive from the last time we spoke. I do this to show them I remember our conversations and that what we discuss is valuable. 
  • Notice or point out something about them that we have in common. 
  • Consulting with parents, teachers, and other stakeholders on how to support a student.
  • 4-year planning, scheduling, and college or scholarship applications are seen as an opportunity to discuss their goals, dreams, and aspirations. 
  • Open door policy-letting kids come to see me or get snacks whenever they need them.

    • Recognize the signs of Trauma
    • Promote safe, stable and nurturing relationships
    • Provide community resource information to students and families dealing with trauma
    • Understand traumas does not predict individual failure if sufficient focus on resilience and strengths is present
    • Avoid practices that may re-traumatize students
