She was the second of five children. She had three sisters Mary, Carrie, and Grace and a brother named Charles who died at just nine months old.  Laura moved many places while growing up including Wisconsin, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota. She was a helpful child who completed several chores to support her family such as assisting in the kitchen and bringing in the cows from the pasture. When Laura was seven her family survived grasshoppers eating their wheat crops for two years in a row. Trouble continued in 1880-1881. There were winter blizzards that caused starvation. A random traveler named Alamanzo Wilder (who would later marry Laura) brought food to people suffering from the blizzards. Mary, Laura's older sister, became blind when she was 14, and Laura was there to guide Mary and be her eyes. The following winter, she took a test and got her teaching certificate at age 15! In 1883, Laura taught five children and earned $40 in two months. When this kind girl was just 15 she earned her teacher's certificate and taught students older than her! Later on in her life Laura decided to devote her time writing about her childhood  memories on the farm. This superior writer wrote an eleven book series called Little House on the Prairie. These books were so popular and interesting she had a medal named after her. Because the books were so exceptional, it won the Laura Ingalls Wilder award and a John Newbery Medal. As Laura grew older, she became known for raising poultry too. Her last job was writing for the Missouri Ruralist. The main reason we remember this multi talented person is because of her memorable childhood books. * In 1889 she had a son who died twelve days after his birth. Laura didn't even get a chance to name him.
* After a couple of years drifting from place to place, in 1894, when Laura was 27 years old , they purchased a house that Laura named Rocky Ridge Farm.
*At the age of 44 she began a new career as a writer for the newspaper, writing articles about farm life. 
* Later on Laura's daughter Rose bought her parents a car and built a modern electricity house.
* Laura made wonderful books so the Detroit Library created a Laura Ingalls Wilder room.
* Laura's house is now the Rocky Ridge Museum with 40 acres of land.
