What I take from this quote is that throughout history poetry has been a form of self expression for many people. Poetry can be about history and poetry is history. Poetry is a popular, healthy, and peculiar way of expressing one's emotions.

Every poem seems to relate to the quote because of the emotions and personal history. We Real Cool seems to have the voice of an observer. I imagine this voice or person watching these pool players. This poem relates to Amy Lowell's quote because someone has emotions toward these people and the voice tells their history. I believe we get a perspective from a different viewpoint than some of the other poems. We feel like we know the people being written about but also the voice of the poem.

Theme for English b relates very well to the quote from Amy Lowell. Today this poem takes place during an important time in history. For the author or the voice of the poem this was their reality whereas for us, it's a part of history. This way of expressing thoughts and feelings lets us see into the author's emotions at a time in history. Our experience reading the poem is very intimate. We almost feel close to the person telling the story which relates to Lowell's quote.

White Lies is a good representation of poetry being used to talk about history as well as emotions, or inside someone's heart. The voice of the poem seems to be an African American with lighter skin. We become close or intimate with the voice. She seems to have had problems with her identity. She's telling white lies about who she is. White Lies is very relatable to the quote.

This poem is based on something that happened to Labrina in the past. This poem is expressive and tugs at your heart. We get to feel many emotions through this poem. We can imagine all of the emotions Labrina had and that the author had while writing it. Reading the article about Labrina's story is actually quite hard to do but the poem takes her story to a different emotional level. Using poetry to tell her story shows that the author felt strong emotions toward Labrina's case which proves that poetry (and history) are the textbooks to the heart of man.

Funeral Blues relates to the quote because the voice of the poem is talking about someone they have history with. The poem shows us how much love there was between the voice and the person they're talking about. It, like most poems, is very intimate. Funeral Blues is a good example of poetry being part of the textbooks to the heart of man simply because of how much emotion is expressed. We really get to see inside this person's mind, heart or emotions.

I, Too is another poem that is literal history and very intimate. Based off the years the author was alive for I imagine this poem is about a black man trying to say that he is also an American. The voice is personal and expresses what seems to be mistreatment. The people sending him to the kitchen are probably white people. The voice could even work for them. He isn't respected enough to be allowed to eat in the dining room. I, Too is literal history from the heart of a man teaching us about his life and emotions. The poem is one of the best examples of Amy Lowell's quote

The Whipping tells a story about a boy who is abused by his mother. This poem let's us understand the emotions that a person has while something traumatic is happening. I almost feel like it was written like an out of body experience at least during the beginning of the poem. This goes back to the heart of man and the history of an individual. This poem demonstrates Amy Lowell's quote fairly well in an interesting way. We feel a connection with the voice of the poem and it is very intimate.

This is another very intimate poem. We read that this young boy obviously loves his dad but his dad is an alcoholic. There is a good side and a bad side to almost everything. Of course there is nothing good about alcoholism but the love that is presented is good. This poem relates to the quote very well because it is literally from the heart of a man (young boy) and it teaches us something like textbooks do. My Papa's Waltz is an interesting poem because of it's content. I think poetry is a different way of telling a story like this but I don't read many poems so I'm not sure if it's actually that different.

America was almost my pick for my favorite poem that we read in class. This is a powerful and very intimate poem. This is written in a perspective that I am not very familiar with. I enjoy it because it's older, historic even. That relates it to Amy Lowell's quote but it also relates to the quote because of the emotions we can understand while reading it. This poem is someone's history, the poem is literal history, and it's very intimate that we can see into the heart of the voice.

The voice is very open about his or her emotions. We can feel and understand what these people are going through. I could understand if this poem had a long lasting effect on someone who can relate to it on a more personal level.

Nature/Gardening, Cemeteries and the Experience Described by Amy Lowell.

For me nature, cemeteries and gardening are history textbooks as well as textbooks to the heart of man. I often go to some woods not far from my house. The woods are known as "the Seminary woods." The land is owned by the Catholic church, school, and housing but the public is allowed. Inside of the woods there is a cemetery that is no longer used because the caskets weren't buried deep enough and the ground likes to move. Many of the headstones are quite old and when you walk through you can feel where the ground is coming up. Cemeteries are history. Cemeteries tell a story. The cemetery in the Seminary has rows of stones with the same death year which tells a story of loss.
Nature is history. Nature tells a story. You can see the huge, old trees and the smaller ones starting to take over. Nature shows us what storms and the elements can do. Animals and animal bones showing life, death; the circle of life. People carving names, dates, and words into trees is almost poetry. When you're in and appreciating nature it is a very intimate and enduring experience.
Gardening is similar to being in nature. Living in the city without having a huge yard with a small forest makes gardening the most accessible source of nature for me. It's an intimate experience. Gardening also gives insight on a person's emotions and creativity. I have bright colored trellises, some people stick to iron and black.
All three, gardening, cemeteries, and nature give me the same feeling or experiences that Amy Lowell wrote about having with poetry. Poetry is not my thing; I'm a novel person. I can understand why Lowell would feel the way she did about poetry because it is a textbook to the heart of man, and it is intimate and enduring.
