There are three traits we see everyday in ordinary lives. These traits are honesty, weakness, and courage, which are further revealed in The Crucible. In this novel, Arthur Miller creates these three universal themes by applying many different literary devices and techniques. The three universal themes- courage, truth, and weakness, are formed through devices such as characterization and dialogue. All of these ideas come together through these literary tools to help show how a group of girls in the small town of Salem, Massachusetts, create major catastrophe throughout the town that further impacts hundreds of people.

Truth, strength, and weakness these three words all seem to go together with one another. These words help to explain things that people in serious situations have. Most have the strength and courage to do anything that they put their mind to, but some on the other hand have fear and weakness and this can lead to bad things happening because they don’t react. We see the three topics mentioned above in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. We see these general character traits as Miller develops them throughout the play. The play is about a village in Salem, Massachusetts set way back in 1692. The plot consists of John Proctor and Abigail Williams having an affair and things going downhill from there as all of Abigail’s friends form a group and start making false accusations about Witchcraft about most of the village. Though many of the characters actions throughout the play, we can see what traits they have, and what they may do when they are called to tell their account. In the play you start to see who has been gifted with the truth trait, the trait of courage, and the trait of weakness.

The idea that one person can have so much power over people through manipulation and lies is a very big part of the theme in Arthur Millers, The Crucible. A lot of innocent people died in this story, would you lie to save your own life?3 main themes are courage, weakness, and truth; they are developed by various literary tools, and by John Proctor. One of the main characters that have all three of these traits at one time is John Proctor. He battles standing up against the witches of Salem to prove that these innocent people are dying because of lies they are told by these girls. His major weakness is that one of the witches was in love with him and he had cheated on his wife with her, the punishment for this is death. John’s truth is only beat by one person and that is Rebecca Nurse, he refused to lie and give his confession for his life. He did sign his name on the confession at a time but he ripped it up and didn’t regret it.

Since an early age, people have been taught to always tell the truth, but in certain situations, will it really do them any good? Arthur Miller shows different ways that the themes of truth, weakness, and courage can affect people’s lives in his play, The Crucible. Throughout the play, the innocent people of Salem are accused, and some convicted of witchcraft. Though some may be brave and speak the truth—that all of the accusations are nonsense—it may only make their situations worse. On the other hand, some characters show their weakness by giving in to the court’s nonsense in order to avoid the consequences they would face if they were to stand up for themselves. In The Crucible, Miller uses plot, dialogue, and character development to show how the themes of truth, weakness, and courage may affect characters, for better or for worse.

In The Crucible, did the tried show true courage and tell the truth? Or did they show weakness and give up on trying to tell the judges they were wrong? There are many events in The Crucible that proves whether or not the Salem witch trials had a purpose or if they simply a hate crime.

No one wants to be trialed and accused for something they didn’t do, especially if the punishment is death. The Crucible, a play written by Arthur Miller, is set in Salem, Massachusetts 1692. The play begins with a group of girls doing what seems to be witchcraft in the woods. When questioned about what they were doing, they lie by saying they were just dancing and accuse innocent people of witchcraft. Courage, weakness, and truth play an important role in the decisions everyone makes. There are many ways in which these elements are shown throughout the play.

Introduction

Arthur Miller uses multiple different types of literary devices and elements of literature to propose his three central themes: courage, weakness, and truth. Diction, sentence structure, and characterization are just a few seen throughout the story. John and Elizabeth Proctor hold and emit a strong sense of courage; two reasons being they want to keep their name pure and go to heaven. The teenage girls in the story hold a strong sense of weakness due to their acceptance to Abigail's power; the girls cannot speak for themselves. Miller uses diction to propose his theme, truth. In the story, Elizabeth Proctor is known for always telling the truth and Arthur Miller expresses the truth theme by using diction through her words

60 percent of people cannot hold a 10 minute conversation without lying; In Salem however, lying was not a part of their community until 1692, when the tragedy of the Salem witch trials divided the community. Arthur Miller, author of “The Crucible,” Makes his feelings towards the Salem trials in 1692 very clear. The use of literary devices such as plot, setting, tone, and imagery convey the parallelism between the Salem witch trials in 1692 and the communist hunts during the “Red Scare” of the 1950s. Throughout the story many characters are put through a dilemma because they are being accused and have to either confess themselves to a lie, which is a sin in itself, or keep faith and die with pride. Abigail Williams throughout the story sees many wrongfully accused people die by her hands, as the hysteria increases and the trials get more and more out of hand, John Proctor. The man Abigail loves, gets accused, destroying her entire scheme. Abigail’s weakness was her fear of the consequences of her actions. John Proctor, a man who is not afraid to let his thoughts be known, has his own secrets. Although John Proctor has never conveyed a spirit in his time, he did once share an intimate moment with Abigail Williams, betraying his wife. Unlike Abigail, however, Proctor courageously confessed his lechery to save his friends and die like a saint. John and Abigail both had great secrets that needed to be expressed to save others, although it would condemn themselves. The plot of this story show that a lie may save yourself, but it can hurt others. Arthur Miller’s tone towards the lies of both the Salem and McCarthy Trials, as well as other literary devices, shows the absolute power of weakness, courage, and truth.

The historical event of the Salem witch trials ethical or not? The accusations of innocent people and the lies told by the death fearing people could be considered unethical. This all comes back to the puritan people; if they were to lie they would be sinning. They would tell the truth to not be executed, but would these people be lying to themselves. The book The Crucible by Arthur Miller displays the character’s through various literary tools like diction, character development and imagery. This helps the book develop the theme courage, weakness, and truth. Throughout the play the character John Proctor is a prominent figure.

Humans are often coerced into believing issues based on what the society portrays often with no regard to good vs evil. Arthur Miller examines this topic in The Crucible. Set in 1692 in Salem, MA a small community is torn with the belief that witchcraft has entered their town. Abigail Williams, along with her teenage friends are accused of practicing witchcraft and they blame a slave, Tituba, for corrupting them. After this incident, a witch trial starts where any person can be convicted of this crime without proof - and they have to admit to it or be hung. In the end over 200 people were accused and 20 are executed. The main one being accused John Proctor where the trails will test his courage, truth and weakness. Miller’s theme illustrates that people are affected by extreme behaviors and shows how quickly weakness and fear escalate.

People have always had their flaws throughout history. In the book, “The Crucible”, by Arthur Miller, Miller manages to find multiple ways to express the themes of courage, truth, and weakness through the uses of literary tools such as characterization, setting, and tone to show how these themes had related to the struggles of John Proctor and give a bit of insight to how they could affect our own lives. These tools help to bring out the theme through different parts of the story that are revealed using these tools. One such thing being the way how in Proctor’s own home, he voiced his anger and ripped up the warrant, but in the court he was more quiet a bit more afraid than at his own home. The different settings show how different situations can influence your behavior. These setting show weakness, as John Proctor no longer had the courage he had at his own home in the court.

In the seventeenth century, rumors regarding the use of witchcraft among women in Salem created fear among the residents of this town. While people in this community were aware that witchcraft was being practiced, no one would confess their knowledge due to fear of being hanged. Ultimately, various people practicing witchcraft begin to turn on each other in order to maintain their innocence. While practicing witchcraft was punishable by hanging, John Proctor found that even though confessing the truth and protecting his wife provided him freedom, this was still punishable by hanging. Arthur Miller uses truth to put a stop to fear of witchcraft in the town of Salem. “The Crucible” demonstrates the division between good and evil in the town of Salem.

The story begins with an affair and ends in despair and tragedy. It goes through twist and turns of showing displays of the three themes.

For many years people wanted to know and wondered if the Salem witch trials were rightfully conflicted or if it was just pure hatred towards those who were accused. In The Crucible, were those that were accused tell the truth and did not hang or did they not tell the truth and were wrongfully accused? There are too many events that happen through the novel to tell if the trials were fair or not and they were in fact hatred towards those accused.

Have you ever wondered how lies and deceit could change a person? In Arthur Miller's novel, The Crucible, he goes into detail about the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. He justifies how hard it was for the town to see innocent people being hung for accusations about them that is all based off of a lie. Originally, all of this started over one person trying to protect themselves and not caring how much it affects the people around them, even if it’s the people they love and deeply care for. Miller's use of literary elements helps the readers understand the truth and theme by using diction, dialogue, and characterization. Throughout the play, we learn that truth, weakness, and courage can all be determining factors on why people act different when they are tested and pushed to their limit.
