MASK PROJECT

Starting this mask initially I had an exact reference photo that I was very adamant on following to a T. As I continued with it I realized there was more that I could do to it. I don't love the way that it came out and I think I could have though of more creative ways to add details. I decided to add lines that looked similar to roots or like tree bark that was capturing the face.

CHALLENGES:
I had a lot of trial and error with the facial features, more specifically with the nose and the lips especially. I re did the lips a total of 6 times and each time I learned a different mistake I was making. The main problem I was having was not connecting the lip to the nose which made it look odd. Once I did that successfully I sort of just played around with the shape and height of them, without making them too puckered.

THINGS I DID WELL:
I think that I did a good job of the shape of everything as a whole and mirroring everything well to the other side. I wish I made better stylistic choices but overall am pleased with it.

mug project

I honestly think that I could have done something more intricate, all though I do like the more simplistic style. I started my mug by creating a short cylinder. I was going to do a latte shape but I decided I liked the simplicity of the cylinder and would focus on detail in the glaze. Instead of a rounder handle I decided that I wanted to make a more square one to contrast the simplicity of the mug. For the handle I used the cut out technique. I rolled a piece of clay and kept it at a certain thickness so that it would hold. I cut a long strip and measured it to the rough width of my specific fingers, and then cut it to the correct length. I then gently bent the clay into the square shape and let it set a little bit until I could attach it. I slipped and scored it and made sure to throughly attach it to the mug. It did crack slightly when drying though.

With this mug I went for a little more detail. I wasn't trying to make a mug with this shape but sort of just was playing around and ended up with it. I still wanted to have a simplistic effort in it but a little more detail than the other one. Even though it is apart of the criteria, I felt that I did not want to add a handle on this mug and keep it more as a cup. I used a mechanical pencil to engrave the mug at the leather hard stage that way there would not be as many clay boogers and I could easily clean it. Overall I am happy with the out come of both.

For me personally the bowls were the easiest for me to make out of everything. Some came with trial and error based on design but for the most part it went well. The most difficult part for me was figuring out glaze combos and techniques that looked good.
