  • The Yuan dynasty (China empire ruled by Mongols) attacked Vietnam with the hope of expanding their empire. Vietnam survived the attack , while the Mongols/Chinese lost. This event happened around 1287 and 1288.

  • Around the 1600s to the 1700s, French  missionaries tried to convert Vietnamese to Catholicism.  France wanted to spread Catholicism instead of coming to search for gold and spices. Instead of rebelling like most countries do, some of Vietnam embraced the idea of Catholicism.

  • This Mongol attack would be the third time they attacked Vietnam. The first two attacks were also unsuccessful, like the third attack. In the end, though Vietnam still gave tributes to Kublai and submitted to Mongol authority.

  • The result of French Missionaries coming to Vietnam was that Vietnamese people became Catholic instead  of Confucian. A man named Alexander de Rhodes, a successful missionary and a Frenchman, arrived in Vietnam, and converted many Vietnamese people to Catholicism, while also translating religious texts into the local dialect. His most notable achievement though was his creation of a Romanised writing system for the  Viet language.

  • The French missionaries coming to Vietnam created a lot of debates about which religion would be a better choice.Even though both my parents were originally Catholic they converted to Buddhism later on. Many people in my family are Catholic, so as a result some of my Catholic family members sometimes took me to Church.

  • Vietnam was able to be influenced by Mongol/China's culture. China introduced the Lunar/Chinese New year, which my family celebrates annually. Many types of food that my family eats was introduced by the Chinese/Mongols.
