Sabs Ongkiko's story reminded me of the concepts of transcendental freedom and Categorical freedom, where our choices lead us to our fundamental stance. I was really struck by how she put importance to not only the large choices, but the small ones as well. This inspires me because she shows that even small actions have value in your whole path to discovering who you are as a person and child of God. Each of these small choices lead you down a path, the general direction in which you go is still influenced by these choices, so it is important that we put effort in choosing the more loving option each day. - Chloe Sioco

Growing up, I have always wanted to start my own business. However, I wanted to have a passion with a purpose. Sab's reflection has inspired me that my actions must lead to the greater good's benefit through being a person for and with others. Her story made me feel that no matter how small my decisions in my day-to-day life may be, I must still consider their influence on the bigger picture. She has inspired me to love the journey and the people I encounter and continue my story with. We have the power to choose how we act and interpret a situation once we reach our dreams. As she mentioned, it would be a challenge to go beyond the self. Nevertheless, once this gets achieved, you allow yourself to grow as a person.

She said that she wanted to be a doctor, but all her actions were directed to being a teacher. In a way, it was like she responded to her calling. Her categorical choices were all aligned to her transcendental freedom. I also got inspired with what she said about not being the smartest student but being a good student because instead of trying to beat everyone, we should strive to help those in need so that not only one will succeed, rather everyone will succeed.

It has always been a dream of mine to become a corporate lawyer because of the main reason that "this is where the money is". In light of this, I have taken up a course in Management Economics because I believed a business course is the way to achieve a successful life. Upon listening to, Miss Ongkiko, I learned how she was willing to give up being a doctor to help our countrymen. More importantly, she chose the loving option rather than that of a selfish one. Having said this, I felt like I needed a change of mindset. With the tragic events of the pandemic, more Filipinos are having a hard time to cope with the new normal and earn for a living. This talk inspired me to be more than just a "corporate slave" but to go out of my comfort zone and help a community in the face of hardships. I felt like I should not only be limited to being a corporate lawyer but extend my expertise to being a human rights lawyer to speak up for those who are voiceless. As I graduate from the Loyola Schools, I must make a decision to "go down from the hill" and be one with my fellow Filipinos in not just improving the life of my family but the millions of families under the poverty line.

Personally, I was inspired because of the fact that what Ms. Sabs did definitely isn't something I'd be strong enough to. Think about it, she's definitely got enough prestige on her belt, with enough credentials to become a highly-paid doctor or scientist in this country. And yet she chose to become a teacher. Simply because this was the way for her to spread love across the generation. Why is that inspiring? Well, dear reader, if you had access to resources that could put you at the top of your field (albeit that becoming quite a lofty role), would you give that up for a role that doesn't pay as well (albeit it becoming quite a heartfelt deed)? I know I couldn't, since I still have that shallow thinking of wanting to keep what I've got, but nevertheless, hats off to Ms. Sabs, who'd chosen the path of the most love.

And you would think that at least apart of me, would want to feel and enact the loving option. And there is a part of me who would want that. But I personally feel, the genuity in the act. Am I urged to do this for my education, or does it come from my heart. I do not intend to shed a bad light in jesuit education, but in my experiences it feels forced. Maybe I would need to go through various means of discernment and faith, but urging to do the loving option does not sell it for me. It does not feel genuine, then again does it have to genuine?

The story reinforces the idea with being persons for others, and being compassionate in a sense that though we may have our hardships along the way, we grow not only as individuals, but as a community. - Matt

To be honest, I feel like most of the choices that I have made in my life have either been made for me or have been non-choices because the right choice for me was so obvious. I don't recall a time when my morals and values have truly been tested. I recalled when I was in my second year of high school, I tried to be as selfless as I could possibly be, which only ended up with me hurting myself and having others take advantage of me. Frankly, I believe that we talk too much about being selfless and generous but we talk too little about how much we should give before we begin hurting ourselves. I suppose Sabs Ongkiko made me reflect on the fine line that I tread between selfishness and selflessness. After all, how can you be generous if you don't have anything to give?

Carlo Saruca

I know that it is ironic since Sabs Ongkiko talked about selflessness and giving back to the community. However, how could I even help others if I could barely even help myself? Although it may sound selfish or narcissistic, the small decisions that I have made in my life were usually for my own benefit. I guarantee you that all of us care about ourselves in one way or another, so we occasionally treat, take care of, and preserve ourselves. Throughout the quarantine, I have been neglecting my physical health severely. My sleep schedule is messy, I study for long periods of time, and I only eat once to twice a day, which resulted in me losing around 40 pounds in the span of almost two years. Perhaps I should take better care of myself. You have to truly be able to love and accept yourself before you could love and accept others.

Carlo Saruca

I worked for her as a secretary during this pandemic and helped her with her online check-ups. By doing this, I learned more about the profession and told myself that maybe I was meant to be one. However, I sometimes have a problem admitting this to myself. Perhaps because I'm scared or afraid that I'm not good enough, I'm not sure. In making sure that the business I work for (or possibly eventually start) is ethical in their processes and treatment of workers in more ways than one. I've always viewed passion as something all-consuming and large, and while that's still the case, what she shared also taught me that it's just as important for these things to be seen in tiny ways, scattered along one's life, because it's there that we learn how essential those things have become to you, since these acts are done naturally, like they're something already part of you. As someone still unsure as to what I think my "calling" is, Sabs' story is an effective insight to take note.

I cannot serve others if I'm not taking care of myself. I cannot be more if I'm only tiring myself out. To be more means to grow, and to grow, one must exercise genuine love.
