Muscle feels tender and noticeable swelling with touch.
Range of Motion & Strength Testing: During passive range of motion test there was approximately less than a 45 degree angle range. During the active-assistive range of motion athlete struggled to flex wrist against intentional resistance, approximately less than a 35 degree angle. During active range of motion the athlete was not able to move the wrist at all due to pain.

Assessment Information: Results of Assessment: Flexor Pollicis Brevis strain
List of problems: swelling, mild bruising, little to none range of motion, discomfort when attempting to move wrist.

Plan of Action: Initial treatment: Ice the first 24 hours after the injury has occurred, apply wrist stabilizer or wrist taping to reduce movement of wrist becasue it is causing athlete pain.
The athlete will be: treated by a certified athletic trainer
Treatment will be: ice first 24 hours after injury for 15-20 minutes every 1-2 hours, then apply heat for the remainder of the injury for the same quantities of time, athlete may massage the muscle to keep it warmed up and soothe pain. Perform the exercises recommended such as resisted radial wrist deviation and resisted wrist flexion 8-12 repetitions of each exercise. Perform and apply this treatment for a week to be sure that the muscle has had enough time to become stronger.
Treatment will consist of: Applying cold and heat therapy to affected muscle, apply wrist stabilizer or taping to help keep the wrist and thumb in a comfortable and safe position that will reduce the chance of further injury. Athlete will also perform strengthening exercises with resistance bands to help the muscles recover and become stronger.
Parents contacted: yes
Date parents contacted: February 1 2018

Athletic Trainer Signature: Carolina Mendez

Resistance bands are an inexpensive and effective tool to help the flexor pollicis brevis strain and also the surrounding wrist muscles that help the injured muscle.

Resisted Radial Deviation using the resistance band will help strengthen the muscles in the radial side of your wrist which is useful because that is the side your thumb is on. Place the resistance band underneath your foot and grip the remaining part around the palm of your hand. Pull the band laterally towards your opposite leg while bending your wrist for 2 seconds then unbending for a count of 5 seconds. Place your forearm on your knee for support. Repeat 8-12 times.

Resisted wrist flexion is another exercise that is used to help the muscles surrounding the flexor policies brevis play its role in the hand. Start the exercise by placing the band under your foot and wrap the remaining piece of band around your hand. Make your hand into a fist so your knuckles face upward. Bend your wrist up towards your face for a count of 2 seconds and unbend for 5 seconds. Repeat 8-12 times.

While performing these exercises make sure to focus on only moving your wrist and keeping your arm still to focus on the injured muscle at hand.

Athlete may use cold therapy gel or ice for pain, the coolness of the gel or ice will be able to slow the rushing amount of blood to the point of injury therefore allowing swelling to reduce on and around the area. Use every 1-2 hours for 15-20 minutes, using the treatment for longer time periods may lead to nerve damage. Ice the first 24 hours the injury occurs to bring down swelling then continue to use heat for the remainder of the injury.

Heat therapy gel for pain and stiffness, use a heating pad or warm object to lay over the injured muscle to keep the muscle warmed up and avoid from getting stiff.

Athlete may use a thumb stabilizer to prevent further injury and is useful to prevent strange movements that will continue to hurt the flexor pollicis brevis muscle. A stabilizer is also useful if the athlete is in a lot of pain when they bend their thumb, it will help keep the thumb in a comfortable and stable position.

A full arm sleeve for elbow, forearm, and wrist pain
