With the advent of the Dinomenidi, the city was enlarged and, although targeted by the Carthaginians, it spent a period of particular splendor until the Roman conquest in 212 BC.
Since then began the decline of Syracuse which in the following centuries was conquered by Arabs, Byzantines, Normans, Swabians and in the fourteenth century by the Aragonese.
