Conclusion

Recently, I’ve been taking an interest in learning about manners that every person, Muslim or Non-Muslim should adopt. Islām (إسلام), which is described with the "Five Pillars of Islam,"
Īmān (إيمان), which is described with the "Six Articles of Faith,"
Iḥsān (إحسان), or "doing what is beautiful," and
al-Sā’ah (الساعة), or The Hour, which is not described, but its signs are given.

This hadith is found in both the Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and the Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim collections. It has been named "Ḥadīth Jibrīl" (the Hadith of Gabriel) by Islamic scholars because the archangel Gabriel appears to Muhammad and those around him in a human form.

Translation 


While we were one day sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), there appeared before us a man dressed in extremely white clothes and with very black hair. No traces of journeying were visible on him, and none of us knew him. He sat down close by the Prophet (peace be upon him), rested his knee against his thighs, and said, "O Muhammad! Inform me about Islam."


The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Islam is that you should testify that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger, that you should perform salah, pay the Zakah, fast during Ramadan, and perform Hajj to the House, if you are able to do so."


The man said, "You have spoken truly." We were astonished at his questioning him (the Messenger) and telling him that he was right, but he went on to say, "Inform me about iman."


He (the Messenger of Allah) answered, "It is that you believe in Allah and His angels and His Books and His Messengers and in the Last Day, and in qadar (fate), both in its good and in its evil aspects." He said, "You have spoken truly."


Then he (the man) said, "Inform me about Ihsan." He (the Messenger of Allah) answered, "It is that you should serve Allah as though you could see Him, for though you cannot see Him yet (know that) He sees you."


He said, "Inform me about the Hour." He (the Messenger of Allah) said, "About that, the one questioned knows no more than the questioner." So he said, "Well, inform me about the signs thereof." He said, "They are that the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress, that you will see the barefooted, naked, destitute, the herdsmen of the sheep (competing with each other) in raising lofty buildings." Thereupon the man went of. I waited a while, and then he (the Messenger of Allah) said, "O Umar, do you know who that questioner was?" I replied, "Allah and His Messenger know better." He said, "That was Jibril (the Angel Gabriel). He came to teach you your religion."

The Five Outward Manners of Seeking Knowledge



1. Repeat and Review

Commenting on this advice, Shaykh Faraz tells us that by repetition, even donkeys learn so there is no reason why we humans cannot learn through repetition.
What do you have to review?
Key Concepts, conditions, and integrals because if you understand these clearly, you understand what you are studying
Definitions (e.g. What is ghusl? What is wudu? What is wiping?)
Shaykh Adib Kallas (rahimahullah) said that matters are known by their definitions.
So, it is of utmost importance that one learns the definitions of what is being studying.
Definitions bring out the meanings of things



2. Take Notes

Take notes while listening, but also make your own notes on readings that are prescribed or supplemental material described in the lecture
Have pen and paper to jot down the most important things described or items to be researched at a later time
Diagram what you are studying because diagramming helps to visual concepts
Diagramming helps you actively engage in what you are learning.
A seeker of knowledge is called a seeker because they are an active participant in learning. The term “seeker” means that you are the one who is searching and acquiring knowledge. You are not being sought for knowledge.
Example: Seekers ask “What else can and should we be reading?” when studying a topic with a teacher.



3. Ask!

The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “The cure for confusion is but to ask”.
We shouldn’t be scared to ask questions from our teachers because if we don’t ask, it may lead to confusion and misunderstanding. Questions should, however, be asked with the proper etiquette and manners.
Asking is half of knowledge
Part of why it is half of knowledge is to know how to ask a question, and the right way of asking questions
Ask also to confirm what you do understand because Ilm is decisive knowledge so it is imperative to make sure your understanding is correct.



4. Extra Readings

You must do extra readings in a guided way, not randomly.
The strong student of knowledge is one who learns the core of their knowledge through teachers but at the same time they continue reading to gain breadth of knowledge.
You can potentially read many things, but you would be foolish to read books above your current level Ilm. So, ask what is appropriate
Anytime you are studying one book, try to read a similar book on the same level
This will deepen your understanding of any topic
Read actively



5. Prepare for class

The best way to prepare for a class is to prepare so much that you know the subject better than the teacher
It is important to prepare for class, just as you prepare to go to school or work.
It is best to read and understand the text of the section being discussed, however, if nothing else, read over the text of the section.
When reading, you may encounter questions which you can then ask when given the opportunity
Many Ulema say that one should prepare for five hours for each one hour of class, however, others have recommended less time for preparation.
The Five Inward Manners of Seeking Knowledge



1. Intention

Have a high intention of why you are seeking knowledge. Is it to seek the pleasure of Allah (may He be exalted), or are you seeking knowledge to show off?



2. Clear & Defined Goals

Have a clear sense of what you are seeking, and define what your goals are for seeking knowledge. What are you trying to achieve? How are you going to go about seeking knowledge? Do you want to be able to teach others?



3. Veneration

Have a deep, unshakeable respect for scholars (even when we disagree), writings of scholars, books (which are the vessels containing the water of guidance), and even knowledge itself
Scholars are inheritors of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)
Disrespect of Ulema is sickness of our times
Have wudu when studying



4. Adab (Manners)

Have proper adab (manners) – you can only have adab if you learn about it



5. Consistency

Learn something every day and review every day. Our lives are busy, but at the same time we should set aside some time every day to learn
Seeking knowledge should become intrinsic for the true seeker
Part of consistency is to have a routine

Faith in Islam stands on six pillars and this was taught to the Muslims in a famous narration of the Prophet (peace be upon him). He said:
Faith means to believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and the Divine Decree, both good and bad.
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

1. Belief in Allah

It is to believe that Allah is the only Creator, Sustainer, King, and Planner of everything in existence.
O mankind! Remember the Grace of Allah upon you! Is there any creator other than Allah who provides for you from the sky (rain) and the earth? None has the right to be worshipped but He. How then are you turning away (from Him)?
Qur'an Chapter 35, Verse 3
Muslims believe that all of mankind was created to dedicate worship for Allah alone. Muslims believe everything else that is worshiped other than Him is falsely worshiped.
To believe in Allah and in His Attributes in the way that is taught within the Qur’an and the Sunnah (teachings of Prophet Muhammad). A Muslim believes that Allah possesses Names and Attributes that only belong to Him. There is nothing in existence that is similar to Him.
There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.
Qur’an Chapter 42, Verse 11
2. Belief in the Angels

Angels are from the world of the unseen.  They were created to obey the commands of Allah and they never transgress His laws or commands. Here is the description of the Angels with verses from the Qur’an:
Who disobey not, (from executing) the commands they receive from Allah, but do that which they are commanded.
Qur’an - Chapter 66, Verse 6
It is upon the Muslim to believe that the angels exist, that they are the creation of Allah, and that some of them have been given names. Some of these names are Jibreel (Gabriel), Mikail, Israfeel, and Malik.

Muslims also believe in the attributes of the angels that have been described within the Qur’an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). For example, it is taught that the Angels were created from light and that the angel Jibreel (Gabriel) has six hundred wings.

The angels have been appointed to perform certain tasks. Here are some examples:
  • Jibreel has been given the duty to deliver the revelations to all the messengers.
  • Malik who has been appointed and entrusted with Hell.
  • Ridwan who was entrusted with Paradise.
  • Israfeel has been entrusted with blowing the Trumpet which signals the beginning of the Day of Judgement.
It is very important for Muslims to believe that every human being has two angels with him who records all of their deeds in a book, regardless of whether they are good deeds or sins.
 
3. Belief in the Revealed Scriptures

In Islam it is a part of faith to believe all the books that were revealed to the messengers. There have been many scriptures revealed throughout the history of mankind. Allah tells us about a few of the names of the scriptures in the Qur’an.

They include the Torah which was sent to Moses, the Gospel which was sent to Jesus, the Psalms (Zaboor) which was sent to David, the scriptures of Ibrahim (Abraham), and the Qur’an itself which was sent to Muhammad (peace be upon them all).

It is He Who has sent down the Book (the Qur’an) to you (Muhammad) with truth, confirming what came before it. And He sent down the Torah and the Gospel
Qur'an Chapter 3, Verse 3
It is obligatory for Muslims to believe in all the Books which Allah has revealed and in all the Prophets and Messengers whom Allah has sent.

O you who believe! Believe in Allah, and His Messenger (Muhammad), and the Book (the Qur’an) which He has sent down to His Messenger, and the Scripture which He sent down to those before (him); and whosoever disbelieves in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day, then indeed he has strayed far away
Qur'an - Chapter 4, Verse 136
Believing in the books that were revealed to the Messengers includes believing that they were revealed by Allah. These scriptures were revealed to mankind in different ways. For example, Muslims believe that the Qur’an was revealed by Allah to Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the angel Jibreel (Gabriel).It is important to understand that one of the reasons Allah revealed the Qur’an to mankind was to confirm the books of revelation that came before it.


4. Belief in the Messengers

It is upon the Muslim to believe in all the messengers that were sent. Among the messengers that were sent are those that have been told to us, ones we know by name, and those that were not mentioned.
And [We sent] messengers about whom We have related [their stories] to you before and messengers about whom We have not mentioned to you. And to Musa (Moses) Allah spoke directly.
Qur'an - Chapter 4, Verse 164
There are 25 messengers who have been mentioned by name in the Qur’an. They include: Adam, Idrees, Nooh (Noah), Hood, Salih, Ibrahim (Abraham), Lut (Lot), Ismail, Ishaq (Isaac), Ya’qoob (Jacob), Yusuf (Joseph), Shu’ayb, Ayoob (Job), Dhu’l-Kifl, Moosa (Moses), Haroon (Aaron), Dawood (David), Sulaymaan (Solomon), Ilyaas (Elias), al-Yasa’, Yunus (Jonah), Zakaria, Yahya, ‘Isa (Jesus) and Muhammad – blessings and peace be upon them all.

Prophets and messengers were chosen by Allah, and were sent to every nation throughout the history of mankind.

Muslims believe they were commanded to call the people to worship only one God – Allah, without associating any partners with Him. They were also commanded to warn those who disbelieved about the punishment of Hell, and to give glad tidings to those who believed about the reward of Paradise.

Some of the prophets and messengers have been given a higher status than the others. Five messengers in particular were given the special title of the Messengers of Strong Will.

They were the best messengers of Allah sent throughout history. They are Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad who was the best of all messengers (peace be upon them all). Every messenger before him was sent to a specific nation. As for Muhammad (peace be upon him), he was the final Prophet and was sent to all of mankind.

Allah chose the prophets and messengers as the best of examples to their nations. Allah bestowed upon them knowledge, understanding, guidance, miracles, protection from falling into sin, and honour.

They are those whom Allah had guided. So follow their guidance.
Qur'an - Chapter 6, Verse 90
As for Muhammad (peace be upon him) he was given more blessings than the prophets and messengers who came before him. The biggest blessing was to be given the final scripture (Qur’an) and be the last messenger sent to mankind.


5. Belief in the Last Day

The Day of Judgment is the day when Allah judges mankind for their deeds. Every human being will be resurrected from their graves and will be given their book of deeds – both good and bad. They will regret the sins they committed as well as the good deeds they had missed.

(Then) a person will know what he has sent forward and (what he has) left behind (of good or bad deeds).
Qur'an - Chapter 82, Verse 5

Believing in the Last Day includes the belief of the punishment and bliss of the grave, belief in the resurrection, belief in the judgment of the scales which will balance your deeds, and belief in Paradise and Hell.

The concept of resurrection may seem far-fetched to some. The Qur’an addresses this issue in many of its verses.

"... And they will say, "Who shall bring us back(to life)?" Say, "He who created you first!..." '
Qur'an 17 : 51
6. Belief in Divine Decree (Al-Qadar)

Al-Qadar is what Allah decrees for every single creation based on what has preceded in terms of His Knowledge and in accordance with His Wisdom. Belief in this pillar is to believe that everything that happens, good or bad, happens only according to Allah’s divine decree.

Zaid ibn Thabit, a Companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him), once said:

‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: “If Allah were to punish the inhabitants of His heavens and of His earth, he would do so and He would not be unjust towards them. And if He were to have mercy on them, His mercy would be better for them than their own deeds. If you had the equivalent of Mount Uhud (a mountain near Madinah) which you spent in the cause of Allah, that would not be accepted from you until you believed in the Divine Decree and you know that whatever has befallen you, could not have passed you by; and whatever has passed you by, could not have befallen you; and that if you were to die believing anything other than this, you would enter Hell.”

Whatever of good reaches you, is from Allah, but whatever of evil befalls you, is from yourself. And We have sent you [O Muhammad], to the people as a messenger, and sufficient is Allah as Witness.

Reflection on Usrah Sem 1: 
My friend on other usrah said that he doesn't like the usrah system. After some deep thought, I agree with him. From my perspective, the topics are kinda cliche. But overall, everything is okay. Moreover, I like how my naqib handle our Usrah. Kinda my type of event-management.

From Usrah Sem 1, I learned that:
1.  Not all people is as lucky as we are, but everyone has different meaning of lucky. Appreciate what we have.
2. Arguments only lead to nothing but a win for Nafs' and Syaitan.
3. Sometimes, we need help from others, but mostly, we need to help ourselves.
4. Everything that happens right now is Allah's Plan, the best Planner.

Scientists have proven that when we express our gratefulness towards other people, we tend to feel happier, calmer and as a result, it opens up more channels for goodness to enter into our lives.

Imagine going through a day where strangers smile at you, greet you, and people hold the door open for you, and more importantly, you feel that this world is full of kindness and people are willing to help you without expecting any return. How would that make your day?

The best part about being grateful and to live a good life, you can do not have to wait for people to do good to you, instead, be the first one to act and express your thankfulness to them, especially your parents.
