The African American community was in most cases the ones who were put in jail and got pointed at by whites who never got blamed. “Well it is an outrageous, tragic crime so anger is understandable, I replied. But it doesn't accomplish anything to convict the wrong person. Whether Mr. McMillan has done anything wrong is what the trial should resolve. If the trial is unfair or if the witness has given false testimony then we cannot know if he is guilty or not." (Stevenson,110) In discussing power and justice, Stevenson persuades in this quote that without the proper evidence of the crime there is absolutely no point in pointing fingers at the wrong person who did not commit the crime. This shows that the trial was unfair and the witnesses provided false evidence that without a fair testimony it cannot be determined if he is guilty or not.

For decades people of the African American community were banned from talking to white people and if they were to do it there would be severe consequences like lynching. “The body of Russell Charley, a black man from Monroe County was found hanging from a tree in Vredenburgh, Alabama. The lynching of Charley who was known by Walters family was believe to have been prompted by an interracial romance.” (Stevenson,30) In discussing power y justice, Stevenson describes the incident that happened to Russell Charley an African American that was found hanging on a tree due to his color of his skin and he was also lynched. This is racism in the way that people were being lynched because of the color of their skin is totally acceptable and not tolerable in society.

Walter had to go through harsh consequences for the murder he was accused of doing just because of his skin color. “After a few months of investigation, we uncovered strong evidence to support Walter's innocence. We discovered that Bill Hooks had been paid by Sheriff Tate for his testimony against Walter- we found checks in the county’s financial records showing close to $5,000 in payments to Hooks reward money and expenses.”(Stevenson,131) In discussing power y justice, Stevenson discusses that he has found proven evidence that would prove that Walter is innocent and not guilty. Stevenson describes Bill Hooks as a liar because he wrote a fake testimony against Walter to put him in jail but Stevenson knows that he was not a witness of the case. It is unfair that African Americans get trialed unfairly by white judges and there was never an African American judge because only whites had control over the trials.
