In Rocket Boys by Homer H. Hickam, Jr., or Sonny in this memoir, he does not believe that most of his family is supportive of him. His dad, Homer Hickam Sr., appears to not care about him in this memoir as much as Jim, his older brother who also appears to hate him. Additionally, he does not talk to him that much since he is always at work. However, there is only one family member who is the only one who seems to care about him and his dreams, and she is his mom, Elsie. After Elsie chides him due to a rocket incident, she warns him that he has to get out of Coalwood and she suggests to Sonny, “[t]o get out of here, you’ve got to show your dad you’re smarter than he thinks./ I believe you can build a rocket./ He doesn’t./ I want you to show him I’m right and he’s wrong” (Hickam 44). In this quote, Elsie believes that Coalwood is dying since she believes that the amount of coal is decreasing. She wants a better future for her children, especially Sonny because she feels that Coalwood would not serve them as much opportunities as other cities. Therefore, she is motivating Sonny to prove to his dad that he is smart and that he can build a rocket. She does not want his dad to view Sonny as a clerk at the mine. This shows that she is supportive of his dreams and that she cares about him. A few moments later, they are at church when the reverend starts talking about sons disrespecting their fathers. Sonny believes that he is mainly referring to him and slides down in his seat. The reverend starts talking about something else though. He starts to advise the “[s]ons to obey [their] fathers./ But fathers, help your sons to dream./ If they are confused, counsel them. If they stray, search them and bring them home” (Hickam 105). Everyone is town is well aware of the rocket incident with Sonny and his friend group, which has been causing a lot of commotion, and no one likes it. Instead of scolding the rocket boys, Sonny and his friend group, he is supporting their dreams. He is also motivating fathers to support their sons’ dream and if they get into difficult times, they should help them.  This shows that he cares about the rocket boys dreams and future. This also shows the importance of family supporting their children. In conclusion, family members should support each other and motivate each other to reach their dreams.
