Our students fall under all of these stages. The most exciting is Speech emergence or production- Here in the classroom we encourage the students to do presentations and answer questions in the english language. We celebrate the willingness to try to use the language more readily

Most of the students in the district are Level 1 students (emerging). I think early production is the most exciting for ELLs because it marks the point where they begin to actively use the new language by producing simple words and phrases. This leads to experiencing a growing sense of confidence and the ability to communicate (even if it is basic) leading to a feeling of accomplishment.

Most of our ELLs are entering so that would be early production.
Speech Emergence or production is exciting because they are becoming independent in the language acquisition process.
Peer support, Scaffolding for lessons, and making them feel welcome and feel successful taking risks..

Earlier in the year most students I interacted with were in the silent or receptive stage, very apprehensive and shy to communicate. Speech emergence was where they were most excited as they were able to then participate in class and communicate with other students with some assistance.

Interactive activities, encouragement, and peer to peer support while both communicating in their native language, as well as "trying" in the English language also gave them a sense of balance.
