It caused by physical or chemical problem in soil that inhibits or prevent the growth of plants. Soil with poor physical structure can limit plants access to oxygen and water. Soil with poor chemical cause result of an imbalance in the naturally occurring elements.

Unwanted competitors : weed
Weeds compete with plants for nutrients, moisture, light and space then grow faster and out-complete desirable plants. Weeds can harbour problem insects and crop diseases. For instance, mustard family weeds can carry over canola diseases, making rotation a less effective tool for disease management.

Pest infection
Agricultural and horticultural crops are attacked by a wide variety of pests, the most important being insects, mites, nematodes and gastropod molluscs. The damage they do results both from the direct injury they cause to the plants and from the indirect consequences of the fungal, bacterial or viral infections they transmit. - Pesticides used in stored products can prolong the viable life of the produce, prevent huge post-harvest losses from pests and diseases and protect the grain so it is safe to eat.
