"Inventor Cleland Davis, U.S. Navy, developed an anti-submarine gun in 1910, which was notable for its ability to cancel out recoil by launching a counter-projectile out of the back end of the weapon at the same time that it was firing on its target. Britain was threatened with a serious lack of essential imported basic foods, and even defeat. Britain reacted by organizing convoys of merchant vessels, protected by escorts of warships. It was the sinking of American merchant ships and loss of civilian lives to indiscriminate submarine attacks that caused the United States to declare war on Germany on April 6, 1917"(Gale 1).
