Women were equal to men in spiritual matters/were often leaders in Quaker meetings
William Penn wanted to find a place for the Quakers to live where they would be safe. He was able to get a charter from the king for a new colony which is known today as PA. He established the “City of Brotherly Love” (Philadelphia).

Spain’s most important colonies -Mexico & South America
Juan de Onate - led an expedition into NM. His goal was to find gold, & convert Native Americans to Christianity & establish a permanent colony. Never found gold, but he did establish Spain’s first settlement in the region of Santa Fe. 
Junipero Serra - a missionary, his first mission was present day San Diego.

  1. Native Americans worked at Spanish missions. 
  2. Farmed, built churches, learned crafts.
  3. They worked 5-8 hours per day/5 or 6 days a week.
  4. They did not work on Sundays or religious holidays.
B. Native Americans were punished harshly if they violated mission rules.
