Kenez outlines the after affects of the death of Stalin and its impact on the Soviet Union. This negative effect on the country is what began a continual decline in the peoples trust in the Soviet Union's governmental system. The citizens of the Soviet Union did not want to live through another Stalinist regime. Khrushchev's ideals instilled fear in the Soviet citizens because they saw his dictatorship as a new form of Stalinism.

Applebaum describes the causes for the uprising. The issues were with the Soviet Union's ideology, but the leaders believed the fault was that of East German bosses. In an attempt to regain German favor, the wanted to enact the "New look" for communism, but the ideologies remained the same. This lead to more unrest, because nothing was solved.

He discussed how after the war, the United States worked towards peace and to relive the tensions of the war. However, the Soviet Union didn't seek peace the way America did. The Soviet Union sought security through force, instead of peace. Eisenhower saw the new leadership of the Soviet Union as a chance for peace.
