What is Criminology about?

Criminology involves studying crime and criminals. It looks at why people commit crime, the consequences of crime and how to prevent it. Criminology is an inter-disciplinary subject, which involves elements of Law, Psychology and Sociology.

Is Criminology an A Level?

Criminology is a Level 3 qualification (like an A Level or a Level 3 BTEC). It carries the same UCAS points as an A Level. It is graded like an A Level. It is the equivalent of an A-Level.

Do we go on trips?

Yes!

There will be a trip to London to visit the Royal Courts of Justice and Parliament (last year we got to meet Boris Johnson).

Next year, we are planning a trip to Ipswich Crown Court where we will sit in on some criminal cases.

We are also inviting in some interesting visitors, like Baroness Newlove (previously the UK’s Victims’ Commissioner).

How is Criminology assessed?

There are four units (equally weighted). Your final grade is calculated by adding together the marks from all four units.

Unit One (Year 12): Controlled Assessment. Sat over 2 days. You can use your notes, but not your textbook. You will be creating a campaign for change relating to crime.

Unit Two (Year 12): Written exam.

Unit Three (Year 13): Controlled Assessment. Sat over 2 days. You will be following a case “from crime scene to courtroom”.

Unit Four (Year 13): Written exam.

Can I re-take the units?

There is an opportunity for at least one re-take of all the units, except Unit 4.

Does it have to be a two-year course?

Units 1 and 2 can be cashed in as the equivalent of an AS Level (half an A Level) if you wish to stop at the end of Year One.

Nyle is a 19-year-old student who enjoys training and competing in the 100 m sprint. Nyle has competed for his local athletics club for several seasons, and he hopes to compete at the highest level he possibly can. Nyle has had a long time away from the sport. He is now determined to start training again as the athletics season will be starting soon. His athletics coach has suggested that he should take part in a full screening assessment for his health and wellbeing before his training programme begins. Nyle’s coach has also suggested that he will need to change parts of his lifestyle if he is to achieve his sporting goals this season. Nyle’s goals are to get back to training on a regular basis and try to achieve a new personal best in the 100m sprint this season.

Produce at least one double page of general research and image gathering based on different artists that creatively use perspective to record the human form. Make sure to include Egon Schiele in your research, as you will be referencing him in the next few pages.

Produce a few double pages of mark-making experiments to explore your materials - consider using sticks, straws, drawing implements, paint, ink, charcoal, etc. to see what outcomes you can create. These do not need to be based upon anything, just an exploration of materials.

Annotate and analyse the results. Think about how the different types of marks can be used in later experiments.

Take a series of photographs of hands (yours or others), print and present in your sketchbook. Try varying the scale to make it more interesting and annotate. You could also try editing apps to double expose the images in order to see what effects you can create, before you begin your initial experiments based upon them.

Create a short film with the title - 'Show Some Imagination'

In Connect, our main character imagined the world around her changing according to the music she was listening to. She also imagined the stranger reacting to her touch.

Taking inspiration from this, you are going to create a short 1-3 minute film in which what happens in the film shows the character’s imagination at work.

Cinematography: this means different shot types and camera angles - use a few different ones, e.g. think how the filmmaker used the close-up on the stranger’s hands.

Editing: You will want to arrange your shots and scenes in a particular order and you may wish to use music too (like in Connect)

Write a short what-how-why paragraph to explain what your film is about, how you used different features (e.g. camera angles or shot types), and why you selected those certain things to include - e.g. what do they tell us about the character?

We’ve done some scene analysis of a film like 'Connect'. Now find a film scene or sequence from a film of your choice and write a paragraph to analyse it: explain what makes this scene interesting for the

GCSE Results Day and Start Of Term Arrangements

Due to popular demand GCSE results will now be available for collection for TGS students from 9am on Thursday 21st August from the Main School Assembly Hall.

For students wishing to register for Sixth Form - You will be required to meet with a member of the Sixth Form Team, to confirm A Level and/or Vocational subject choices.

If you are not able to collect your results in person, you can write a letter authorising a family member or friend to collect them on your behalf (TGS students), or you can supply Mrs Crawford in the exams office with a self addressed envelope and she will post them to you. Alternatively, they can be emailed to you by request to Mrs Crawford lcrawford@tgschool.net.

You must please email sixthform@tgschool.net to confirm that you wish to take up your place in Sixth Form and confirm the subjects you wish to study.

Staff will be available to discuss results on a first come, first served basis on results day.

For your A-Level portfolio project, you will be starting with a workshop style preparatory project exploring the development of 35mm SLR film, the uses of the darkroom and processes such as inversion, solarisation and multiple exposures. This will be the first of multiple development projects leading to the start of your personal investigation project. In preparation for the project, please gather the following and have them ready for printing when we start the course in September, either on a memory stick or on Google Drive.

Included in the Summer Task Booklet from page 11 are some suggested tasks to complete in preparation for studying some of the A level topics. Some of the tasks are aimed at gaining a greater knowledge of German culture

in general whereas others are directly linked to one of the modules on the A-level course.

Keep a log of all of the tasks you complete and don’t forget to record your sources (e.g.

books used, websites visited and the date). It may be useful to set up a folder to record all

of the work you complete (see Appendix 2: Setting up an Independent Learning Log).

German Summer Task Booklet

Both the film (‘Das Leben der Anderen’ – Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck) and the book (‘Der Besuch der

alten Dame’ – Friedrich Dürrenmatt) that you will study at A-level have important historical contexts.

It would therefore be useful to do some research into Germany during this period of history:

• Research life in the post-war German period

• How did Germans deal with their Nazi past?

• What was life like for East Germans in the 1980s?

• How influential was the Stasi in the life of GDR citizens?

In Year 13, you will be asked to conduct an Individual Research Project where you will research a topic of

your own choosing relating to a German-speaking country and present your research as part of your

speaking exam.

The following tasks will enable you to develop your research skills in preparation for this as well as give you a range of topics you may be interested in researching further at a later date.

1. Research the different regions of Germany. How is the culture or geography different between the different regions? Choose one region to focus on in more detail and find out about the typical customs, traditions, festivals, foods etc. from this region.

2. Research the wider German-speaking world. How many countries in the world speak German? Choose a country other than Germany to research in more detail. Find out about the history, music, politics and general culture. How is it different from Germany?

3. Research a time in Germany’s history that you don’t know much about. Do you know why the following dates are significant for Germany?

Use the hints and tips mentioned in the Summer Task Booklet to find different ways of practising different skills in ways that you find effective and interesting. Keep a record of everything you read, watch and listen to as well as

any written work or grammar activities you complete.

Use the News grid Information (Page 21 onwards of the Summer Task Booklet to begin your better understanding of German news.)

Select a story that suits your interests and time requirements. International news and universal issues such as the environment, the economy, science, technology and sport may be easier to understand than complicated domestic issues that require prior knowledge of German society, politics etc.

You may find text versions or transcripts of the story elsewhere on the site. Make a note of key words and look up

any you don’t know.

If you have time to do so, look up the story on an English site first to find out a bit about the detail.

Viewing:

Start by just watching the headlines. They tend to go very fast and might be difficult to grasp. Try watching through

before stopping and going back to watch in smaller parts.

Watch more than once. It may take a while to get used to hearing the language – particularly at that speed!

As you watch, use the News Grid to pick out particular information each time rather than trying to understand it all

at once. You will probably find that you understand the material better by following this process.

After Viewing:

Choose a particular news item which has caught your interest and re-write your notes as it for a newspaper,

including a headline.

Keep a record of your session including a link to the video so you can re-watch at a later date and compare notes.

Write your own script for a chosen story and record yourself acting as a newscaster.

Use the Independent Language Learning Log (Page 23 onwards of the Summer Task Booklet to begin your personal language journal)

Your Independent Language Learning Log is like a personal diary, so keep it up to date, add to it regularly and put a date on each entry. Use the grids on booklet pages to keep track of activities completed.

• Keep a record of all your learning activities, even things with no physical ‘proof’ such as speaking practice with a partner or listening to the radio.

• Reflect on whether different activities have been useful or not once completed. If a certain type of activity is proving less effective, is there something else you could try?

• Keep examples of completed work that you can look back through. You may want to include:

- Samples of homework and tests you are proud of (once we begin the course)

- Things which are useful for revision such as vocab lists and grammar notes

- Articles you have read with your summary or notes

- Summaries of films you’ve seen

- Print-outs of online grammar activities

- Notes on films and programmes you have watched/listened to including completed News Grids

- Translations of texts you have chosen yourself

- Research into some of the topic areas for the A-level course

Write a Python program that checks if a given string is a palindrome. A palindrome is a word, phrase, or sequence that reads the same backward as forward. The program should take user input for a string and then output whether it is a palindrome or not.

Challenge 3:

Write a Python program that counts the number of words in a sentence. The program should take user input for a sentence and then display the total number of words in that sentence. Ignore punctuation marks and assume words are separated by spaces.

Challenge 4: 

Text Encryption Write a program that takes a string and a key as input and encrypts the string using a simple substitution cipher. The substitution cipher replaces each letter in the alphabet with a corresponding letter from the key. The program should output the encrypted string.

Challenge 5:

Write a Python program that simulates a simple calculator. The program should take user input for two numbers and an operation (+, -, *, /). The program should perform the operation and display the result.

Challenge 6:

Write a Python program that takes a list of numbers as input and finds the largest and smallest numbers in the list. The program should display the largest and smallest numbers.

Challenge 7:

Write a Python program that simulates a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. The program should allow the user to enter their choice (rock, paper, or scissors), generate a random choice for the computer, and then determine and display the winner based on the game rules.

Challenge 8:

Write a Python program that takes a list of words as input and sorts them alphabetically. The program should display the sorted list of words.

Challenge 9:

Write a Python program that simulates a game of Hangman. The program should choose a random word from a predefined list, and then allow the user to guess letters. The program should display the hangman figure and the progress of the word as the user makes guesses.

Write a Python program that takes a list of integers as input and returns a new list containing only the prime numbers from the original list. The program should display the new list.

Harder Challenge 2:

Write a Python program that simulates a game of Blackjack. The program should allow the player to make decisions such as hitting or standing, keep track of their score, and determine the winner based on the game rules. Implement additional features such as multiple players or a computer-controlled dealer for an extra challenge.

Harder Challenge 3:

Write a Python program that implements a basic text-based adventure game. The game should have different rooms or locations that the player can navigate through, interact with objects or characters, and make decisions that affect the outcome of the game. Consider adding features like puzzles, inventory management, or branching storylines to make the game more challenging.

Create a text-based fruit machine game where the player starts with a set number of credits and can choose how much to stake on each spin. The machine should contain a selection of fruit machine symbols that appear randomly on the reels. Players win credits when matching symbols appear on one of the machine’s winning lines. As the game develops, you should add extra arcade-style features such as holding reels, nudging reels, changing the stake amount, multiple winning lines, bonus rounds and jackpots. The program should save player statistics, such as total spins, highest balance and total winnings, to a CSV file so they can be loaded again when the game is restarted.

Challenge 2: Lemonade Entrepreneur 🍋

Create a business simulation where the player runs a lemonade stand over a period of 30 virtual days. Each day, the player must decide how many supplies to buy and how much to charge for a cup of lemonade. Customer numbers should depend on factors such as weather conditions and special random events. Sunny days may attract more customers, while rainy days may reduce sales. The program should calculate daily profit or loss and save information such as the weather, selling price, number of customers and profit to a CSV file. At the end of the game, players should be able to view their performance and analyse their sales history.

Challenge 3: Wildlife Park Manager 🦒

Create a simulation where the player manages a wildlife park and attempts to make it successful over a number of days. The player starts with a budget and a small collection of animals. Each day, money is earned from visitors and spent on food and animal care. Random events should affect the park, such as new animals being born, illnesses, bad weather or special visitors. Information about the park’s finances, visitor numbers and animal collection should be stored in CSV files so the player can track progress over time. More advanced versions could allow the player to buy and sell animals, manage different species and produce end-of-season reports.

Challenge 4: Mini Stock Market Tycoon 📈

Create a simplified stock market simulator where the player starts with a fixed amount of money and can buy and sell shares in several fictional companies. Each company’s share price should change randomly every day, with occasional news events causing larger increases or decreases in value. The player’s goal is to grow their wealth by making good investment decisions. The program should save historical share prices and player transactions to CSV files so that previous market data can be analysed. More advanced versions could include market crashes, company-specific events and graphical displays of share price trends.

General Requirements

For all challenges:

• Use random numbers to make each game or simulation different every time it is played.

• Read data from CSV files when the program starts.

• Save data to CSV files while the program is running or when it finishes.

• Use functions to organise the code.

• Include suitable validation to prevent invalid user input.

• Design the program so that additional features can be added easily in the future.

Success Criteria: Create a program that is enjoyable to use, stores data between sessions, and offers enough challenge that no two playthroughs feel exactly the same.
