Cliques are one of the most common conventions seen in this genre because it provides characters that are easily understandable for the audience. Teenagers are stereotypically split up into groups therefore this is exaggerated in films. Furthermore, teen movies often have a larger cast, therefore stereotyping saves the writer time because they do not have to provide a back story for every character, but can instead fit them into a very typical social group. The groups that are represented are usually the popular girls and their boyfriends, the athletes, the nerds, the emos and the drama kids. This is because they are easily relatable characters because an audience usually relates to people of their own age range. They are usually white because there is a significant lack of representation of black people within the media, and if there is they are usually undeveloped characters therefore making them a supporting role. The class and status of characters in teen musicals can vary between each film, for example, in 'High School Musical', the characters are mostly middle class, but in 'Hairspray', Tracy Turnblad is working class and the middle and upper class characters are presented as the villains. They are usually heterosexual and if there is representation of any other sexuality, the character is usually a supporting one who is very over exaggerated, such as the representation of Kurt in 'Glee'.
