He describes closeness as sort of a harmony of musical elements used purposefully by the musician. This could be used to emphasize a certain area of the song or it could be used simply to enhance the song itself. It interesting technique that is still used today, whether it be drums strategically playing over each other like Earl Phillips on Wolfs or other instruments and even the artists or singers can use this technique with their voices. Ratliff states that Earl Phillips puts two, or even up to four, snares playing with each other to achieve the perfect sound, beat, and rhythm Phillips is searching for.
